Student answer (Band 6.0)
There is an argument that old buildings should be restored even though this can cost a fortune while others say that government should just replace them with new and modern buildings. In my opinion, town halls and art galleries should be refurbished because they come with memories of the past and connects us to our root. This essay will discuss both views before giving my opinion.
To start with, old buildings should be restored even though this might be expensive because it takes us down to memory lane of things that has occurred in the past, such as wars that were fought and won. Also, artefact that hold cultural, historical or archeological importance. For examples, Art galleries stores and preserved images of people that did something extraordinary in the past. Furthermore, although all of this can be expensive but it tells us stories of how some of our generation began and household histories.
However, while some persons think new buildings should be built. I do think this might be due to the fact that technology has advanced and people believe we can construct more better buildings that are well planned with beautiful appearance. Moreover, I do not agree with this idea because following this idea one would not be able to visualize things from the past and one can loose connection of their roots.
Overall, some individual believe that old buildings should be preserved even though it might be expensive while others say it is better to get them replaced with new building. I believe restoring them is quite better regardless of the cost because it helps to connects one their root and also comes with memories of the past.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
The response addresses all parts of the prompt, discussing both views and providing a clear personal opinion. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited. For instance, the argument regarding the cost of restoration is mentioned but not fully explored, and the points about 'memory lane' and 'wars' are quite general. To reach a higher band, you should provide more specific, concrete examples or deeper analysis of why the preservation of historical architecture is socially or economically beneficial, rather than relying on repetitive phrasing about 'memories' and 'roots'.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The essay is organized into logical paragraphs, and there is a clear progression of ideas. You use some cohesive devices like 'To start with', 'However', and 'Overall' to signal transitions. However, the use of these devices is sometimes mechanical or slightly inaccurate, such as the sentence fragment 'Also, artefact that hold cultural...'. Additionally, the referencing is occasionally unclear, and some sentences lack smooth flow. Improving the variety of linking words and ensuring that each sentence connects logically to the previous one will help improve the flow of your writing.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
The vocabulary is adequate for the task but lacks the precision and range required for higher bands. You use some basic terms repeatedly, such as 'expensive', 'buildings', and 'past'. There are also some collocation errors, such as 'more better' (which is grammatically incorrect) and 'loose connection' (should be 'lose'). To improve, try to incorporate more sophisticated synonyms and topic-specific vocabulary related to architecture, urban planning, and heritage conservation to demonstrate a wider lexical range.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
The essay contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors that occasionally impede clarity. Examples include subject-verb agreement issues ('artefact that hold', 'some individual believe'), incorrect comparative forms ('more better'), and punctuation errors, such as the sentence fragment starting with 'For examples'. While the meaning is generally clear, these persistent errors in basic grammar and sentence construction prevent the essay from reaching a higher band. Focus on proofreading for subject-verb agreement and avoiding redundant comparative structures.
