Some people believe that old buildings, such as town halls and art galleries, should be restored, even though this can be costly. Others argue that governments should replace them with new, modern buildings.

Discuss both views and give your own opinion.

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

According to a few individuals old structures, halls and galleries should be repaired and maintained. While some oppose that authorities should replace them with contemporary and more up to date buildings.

There are a few points that will tell us the importance of Vintage town halls and galleries. Firstly they help to maintain the heritage and culture of the place. Many tourists around the world visit specific conturies for their old bulidings so they can know more about the place and its culture. Secondly they have some historic references attached to it. For instance Casa Loma In Toronto is an old castle where you can know alot about the king and the family who owned it, there are also some things they used which have still been preserved.

Mordernisation has it's own upsides. Up-to-date structures give a new look to the city. New architectural structures add value to the skyline. For instance the newly constructed One World Trade Center in New York gives a new face to the city. Consequently these structures can be used more productively. Instead of using buildgings for museums and art galleries they can be used as offices, malls or hotels which help the growth of economy.

In my opinion mordernisation of bulidings superceeds the latter view of maintaing and restoring old structures. As discussed, though old structures maintain heritage and culture of the place however mordern buildings add more value not only to the skyline of a place but is also less financially draining for the authorities. Therefore more mordern bulidings should be made so the government is not wasting money on maintaining old ones.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses both sides of the argument and provides a clear personal opinion. However, the development of ideas is somewhat superficial. While you mention heritage and economic growth, the arguments could be more deeply explored with more nuanced reasoning. For instance, the discussion on economic growth is a good point, but it lacks a counter-argument regarding the potential loss of cultural identity. The position is consistent throughout, but the conclusion could be more robust by synthesising the two views rather than simply restating the preference. Overall, the task is addressed, but the depth of analysis is limited, which prevents a higher band score.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is organised into clear paragraphs, which helps the reader follow the structure. You use basic cohesive devices like 'Firstly', 'Secondly', and 'Consequently' to link ideas. However, the flow between sentences is sometimes mechanical, and the transition between the two views could be smoother. The referencing is generally clear, but there are instances where the logical progression feels a bit disjointed, particularly in the introduction where the two opposing views are not linked effectively. Improving the variety of cohesive devices and ensuring they are used more naturally would enhance the coherence of the essay.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'contemporary', 'modernisation', and 'architectural structures'. However, there are several spelling errors throughout the text, such as 'conturies' (countries), 'bulidings' (buildings), 'Mordernisation' (Modernisation), and 'superceeds' (supersedes). These errors are frequent enough to be noticeable. Furthermore, some word choices are slightly imprecise, such as 'tell us the importance' instead of 'highlight the importance'. To improve, focus on proofreading for spelling and aim to use more sophisticated collocations to express your ideas with greater precision.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While you attempt complex sentences, there are frequent errors in grammar and punctuation. For example, 'While some oppose that authorities should replace them...' is grammatically incomplete, and 'it's' is used incorrectly for the possessive 'its'. There are also issues with subject-verb agreement and article usage, such as 'the growth of economy' (the economy). While these errors do not prevent the reader from understanding your message, they occur frequently enough to impact the overall fluency and accuracy of the writing. Increasing the variety of error-free complex structures is recommended.
