Student answer (Band 6.0)

It is often argued that historical buildings should be restored by the government, while others state governments should invest in these buildings to replace them into modern style buildings. Restoring them will help protect the culture and history of that particular country. However, constructing new buildings will bring new developments in the nation. I will discuss both these views followed by my opinion.

One of the major reasons why they should be restored is that these historical buildings depicts the history and connects the young generation with the culture. Youth can learn the actual reason why that building was made, by this they learn about the past. Moreover, they can learn the old architectural styles used in the past. For example, Taj Mahal, which is a historical building, build by a ruler named Shahjahan for his beloved wife showed his love towards his wife. Another building called Jallian Wala Bagh situated in Amritsar tells about the how innocent people were killed by a British inspector. As a result, preserving them might preserve the history of the country for a long time.

On the other hand, those who suggest replacing them with new building is because they think modern buildings will help a country to progress from developing to a developed nation. If a country have modern buildings this might attract numerous international people. Because having several restaurants, shopping malls, cafes will provide options to try various items. For instance, people are attracted towards European countries as they have modern facilities. Consequently, improving the economy.

To conclude, although new buildings can make a country from developing to developed by providing numerous facilities and attracting international people, in my opinion, old historical buildings should not be completely replaced by the new buildings, as these old buildings keep the youth connected to their culture and history, and if it is not protected they may lose their culture.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses all parts of the prompt, discussing both views and providing a clear personal opinion. The ideas are relevant, such as the cultural value of historical sites versus the economic benefits of modernization. However, the development of these ideas is somewhat limited. For instance, the argument regarding modern buildings is slightly repetitive, focusing heavily on 'attracting international people' without exploring other aspects of modernization like infrastructure or housing. While the position is clear throughout, the supporting arguments could be more thoroughly extended to reach a higher band. Overall, the task is addressed adequately, but the depth of analysis is somewhat basic.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay is logically organized into clear paragraphs, with an introduction, two body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Cohesive devices are used, such as 'Moreover', 'On the other hand', and 'Consequently', which help guide the reader through the argument. However, some transitions are a bit mechanical, and there are instances where the flow is slightly disrupted by awkward phrasing, such as 'by this they learn about the past'. Paragraphing is used appropriately, and there is a clear progression of ideas from the introduction to the final conclusion. The referencing is generally clear, though some sentences could be linked more fluidly.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary is sufficient to convey the message, but it lacks the range and precision required for a higher band. There are some repetitive word choices, such as the frequent use of 'buildings' and 'people'. Some collocations are slightly unnatural, such as 'replace them into modern style buildings' (should be 'replace them with modern buildings'). While the student attempts to use topic-specific vocabulary like 'architectural styles' and 'preserving', the overall range is limited. The errors in word choice do not impede communication, but they do highlight a need for more sophisticated and varied lexical items to express ideas more precisely.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The student uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as subject-verb agreement issues ('these historical buildings depicts', 'If a country have') and incorrect verb forms ('build by a ruler' instead of 'built by a ruler'). Punctuation is generally functional, but there are some awkward sentence constructions that affect readability. While the meaning is always clear, the frequency of these errors prevents the essay from reaching a higher band. To improve, the student should focus on ensuring subject-verb agreement and refining the use of passive voice and relative clauses.
