Student answer (Band 6.5)

Some people argue that old buildings should be repaired despite of being expensive. While, others favor the construction of new buildings. I believe that old buildings should be preserved because of its unique designs and boast visitors industry. This essay will highlight both the viewpoints with relevant examples.

On the one hand, old buildings has special design. Resorting of these buildings would help to preserve unique features, history and culture. The patterns which were made on historical buildings might not be copied again with modern technology. Hence, this would spoil the originality of buildings. For instance, Taj Mahal made in India is described as seven wonders of world. If this building would be replaced with new one then we would lose a chance to see original work. Moreover, repairing old buildings would boast the visitors industry. People spend a lot who comes from across the overseas to see ancient structure. If the government do not focus on preserving old structure it would mitigate the visitors visit. As a result, it would also hamper the economy of specified country.

On the other hand, modern buildings guarantee more safety than old old ones. Even after repairing and investing a lot some parts of the building cannot be fixed. This would lead to vulnerable situation where people could get hurt if something fall of the roof during extreme weather condition. In this case constructing new buildings is safe. In addition to this, modern building are budget friendly. Modern construction include modern facilities which are cheaper in market as compared to ancient stuff. To cite an example, the superiors in foreign countries are replacing old museum buildings with new ones that has many new facilities. Consequently, this would help to reduce the cost and people would get something innovative to see.

I believe that resorting of building should be prioritized because they helps to save a country's origin as well support financially by boasting visitors industry.

To conclude, undoubtedly new buildings has several benefits such as its is cheaper as well as much safer than the old ones. However, old building cannot be replaced as they depicts the history of country and its unique pattern cannot be copied again.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The response addresses all parts of the prompt, discussing both views and providing a clear personal opinion. The position is consistent throughout the essay. Ideas are generally relevant, such as the mention of cultural heritage and economic benefits for preservation, and safety and cost-efficiency for new construction. However, some arguments are slightly under-developed; for instance, the claim that modern facilities are 'cheaper in market' is a generalization that lacks nuance. The essay maintains a clear focus on the task, and the conclusion effectively summarizes the main points while reiterating the author's stance.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay is organized into logical paragraphs, with a clear introduction, body paragraphs for each viewpoint, and a conclusion. Cohesive devices are used, such as 'On the one hand,' 'Moreover,' and 'In addition to this,' which help guide the reader. However, there are instances where the flow is slightly mechanical, and some referencing is unclear, such as the use of 'its' in the introduction, which lacks a clear antecedent. Paragraphing is used appropriately, and there is a clear progression of ideas throughout the text.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, though there are several instances of awkward word choice and collocation errors. For example, the student uses 'boast visitors industry' instead of 'boost the tourism industry' and 'mitigate the visitors visit' instead of 'reduce visitor numbers.' There are also minor errors like 'resorting' instead of 'restoring' and 'superiors' instead of 'authorities' or 'planners.' While the range is sufficient to convey the intended meaning, the lack of precision and occasional misuse of terms prevent a higher score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. However, there are frequent grammatical errors that occasionally impede the reader's flow. Common issues include subject-verb agreement (e.g., 'old buildings has,' 'they helps'), article usage (e.g., 'the seven wonders of world'), and prepositions (e.g., 'despite of'). There are also errors in pluralization and tense consistency. While the meaning is generally clear, the frequency of these errors indicates a lack of control over more complex structures, keeping the score in the 6.0 range.
