Student answer (Band 6.0)

Alot of people have their different views on whether thesse old buildings such as musems ,town halls or art galleries should be replaced or restored.

Firstly, old buildings such as Musems ,town halls and art galleries should be restored because these are valuable to the society and are part of history. We as youths go to the musems for the asethectics and learn about the history of our country that were not aware about or that we did not learn in High school, also keeping the town halls it holds old memeories for the older generation because they could remember they followed their parents to the town halls for meetings and other events which they had had great times with their parents. For instance, Back home in my home country which is Nigeria,We go to my village every december for the holidays and my Daddy still points out the town hall where him and his siblings follow their mother to for meeting and events nad which they enjoy and which they still remember their mother with as memory of her because she is dead.

Secondly, these old buildings need to be replaced because the world is evolving and there is new method of how buildings should be built and most buildings are now built with technology which makes the lives of these new generation more easier but these old buildings are getting boring such there is no technology to assisst in there and it lack of color.

In conclusion, in my own view ,i would say way we could balance things out by renovating those old buildings as the world is evolving and adding color to them and making them aesthectically pleasing for this new generation who just want anything they can take pictures in without making research about these buildings.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses both views and provides a clear personal opinion in the conclusion. However, the development of ideas is somewhat uneven. The argument for restoration is supported by a personal anecdote, which is relevant, but the argument for replacement is less developed, relying on vague claims about 'technology' and 'color'. The conclusion introduces a compromise, which is a good approach, but the reasoning remains superficial. To reach a higher band, ensure that both sides of the argument are explored with equal depth and that the supporting examples are more analytical rather than purely descriptive.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is organized into clear paragraphs, which helps the reader follow the progression of ideas. Cohesive devices are used, such as 'Firstly', 'Secondly', and 'In conclusion', but they are somewhat mechanical. There are instances where the flow between sentences is slightly disjointed, particularly in the second paragraph where the transition from the benefits of technology to the criticism of old buildings feels abrupt. Referencing is occasionally unclear, such as the use of 'these' without a strong preceding anchor. Improving the variety of linking words and ensuring smoother transitions between sentences would enhance the overall coherence.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, but it lacks the precision and range required for higher bands. There are several spelling errors ('Alot', 'thesse', 'musems', 'asethectics', 'nad') and some awkward phrasing, such as 'lives of these new generation more easier'. While the student attempts to use topic-specific vocabulary like 'renovating' and 'aesthetically pleasing', the overall range is limited. To improve, focus on using more sophisticated collocations and ensuring accurate spelling of key terms. Avoid informal phrasing like 'my Daddy' and 'Back home in my home country'.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors that occasionally impede readability. Issues include subject-verb agreement ('it holds old memeories'), incorrect verb tenses ('they had had great times'), and punctuation errors (missing spaces after commas, unnecessary capitalization). The sentence structure is often repetitive, relying on 'and' to connect clauses. To achieve a higher score, the student needs to demonstrate better control over complex sentence forms and pay closer attention to basic grammatical accuracy, particularly with articles, prepositions, and verb forms.
