Student answer (Band 6.0)
Many think our old castles should be maintained even though it might be expensive while others seek that government should replace them with modern structures. Though this replacement will add sophistication to the building there will be economic implications. i strongly suggest that old building should be retained because it will provide a cultural and historic origin to our tourists.
Firstly, one major reason for maintaining an old building is that it can be used to generate revenue for the town as visitors troop in to see one popular old gallery. For example people from different countries travel to France just see the oldest castle and even lodge in the closest hotel around the area just to have a view of the old castle
On the other hand, despite the energy given on maintaining old houses, erecting a new building will require much funding which may affect the economy with such advancing in architecture of modern houses which are now built with more sophistication and are energy conservative, the decision to demolish an old building by government for new one will have a resultant effect of loss of both cultural and historic origin, for instance the pyramid in Egypt have preserved the story of their existence for ages and still counting.
In conclusion, while so many people prefer retaining old building and maintained them as others suggesting new building kept i suggest that our cultural and historic origin should be preserved

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5
The response addresses both views and provides a clear opinion. However, the essay is under the 250-word minimum, which limits the depth of development. While the ideas are relevant, the arguments regarding the economic implications of new buildings are somewhat underdeveloped. The conclusion is also quite brief and does not fully synthesize the points discussed. To reach a higher band, you should expand on your examples and ensure that the discussion of both sides is balanced and sufficiently detailed to meet the length requirement.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The essay is organized into logical paragraphs, and there is a clear progression of ideas. You use some cohesive devices such as 'Firstly' and 'On the other hand' to signal shifts in the argument. However, the use of linking words is sometimes mechanical, and there are instances where the flow between sentences is slightly disjointed. For example, the transition between the discussion of modern architecture and the loss of history could be smoother. Improving the variety of cohesive devices would help the text flow more naturally.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
The range of vocabulary is adequate for the task, but it lacks the precision and sophistication required for higher bands. You use some relevant terms like 'sophistication', 'economic implications', and 'energy conservative', but there are also some awkward collocations and word choices, such as 'visitors troop in' and 'still counting'. Additionally, there are minor errors in word form and usage that occasionally affect the clarity of your points. Expanding your vocabulary to include more academic collocations would enhance your score.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. However, there are frequent grammatical errors, particularly with subject-verb agreement (e.g., 'old building should be retained', 'pyramid in Egypt have preserved') and punctuation. Some sentences are also quite long and lack the necessary commas to maintain clarity. While these errors do not completely impede communication, they are frequent enough to prevent a higher score. Focusing on proofreading for basic grammatical accuracy and sentence structure would be very beneficial.
