Student answer (Band 6.5)

There are many visitors think that ancient buildings like town halls and art galleries, should be maintained, although this can be expensive. While other community believe that Governments should rebuilt them with new and modern malls. Nevertheless, I will discuss both the sides in detail and give my opinion in upcoming parts of the essay.

On the one hand, restoring old buildings has several benefits. First, these buildings are an important part of a city’s history and culture. Moreover, they can help people understand how their society developed in the past. In addition, many old buildings have beautiful designs that cannot easily be found in modern buildings. For example, an old town hall can attract tourists and provide a sense of identity to local people.

On the other hand, some people believe that old buildings should be replaced with modern ones. The main reason is that repairing old buildings can be very costly. Governments may need to spend a large amount of money on maintenance and renovation. Moreover, modern buildings are usually safer, more comfortable and more energy-efficient. They can also provide better facilities for the public.

In my opinion, old buildings that have historical or cultural value should be restored. Although this can be expensive, preserving important parts of history is more valuable in the long term. However, buildings that have no special value should be replaced with modern ones.

In conclusion, although modern buildings can provide better facilities, old buildings with historical importance should be preserved and restored.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The response addresses all parts of the prompt, discussing both views and providing a clear personal opinion. The ideas are relevant and logically extended, particularly in the body paragraphs where you contrast the cultural value of old buildings with the practical benefits of modern ones. However, the development is somewhat brief. To reach a higher band, you could provide more specific examples—for instance, mentioning a real-world city or a specific type of building restoration project—to add depth to your arguments. Your position is consistent throughout the essay, which is a strength.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, two body paragraphs, and a conclusion. You use cohesive devices such as 'On the one hand,' 'Moreover,' and 'In addition' to guide the reader through your arguments. The progression of ideas is smooth and easy to follow. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the different viewpoints. To improve, ensure that your referencing is always precise; for example, in the first paragraph, the phrase 'upcoming parts of the essay' is slightly unnatural and could be replaced with a more standard academic transition.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'renovation,' 'energy-efficient,' and 'historical value' correctly. However, there are some minor inaccuracies and awkward phrasing, such as 'There are many visitors think that' (should be 'Many people think that') and 'rebuilt them with new and modern malls' (malls is too specific and narrow for the context of town halls). To achieve a higher score, try to incorporate more sophisticated collocations and avoid repetitive sentence structures. Your vocabulary is sufficient to convey your meaning clearly, but lacks the precision and flexibility of higher bands.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are several grammatical errors. For instance, 'There are many visitors think that' is a subject-verb agreement error, and 'Governments should rebuilt' should be 'should rebuild.' Additionally, 'both the sides' is slightly unnatural; 'both sides' is preferred. You have a good grasp of basic grammar, but the frequency of these small errors prevents a higher score. Focusing on subject-verb agreement and correct verb forms after modal verbs will help improve your accuracy.
