Student answer (Band 6.5)

In recent time, there has been a huge deal of argument between people saying old architectural buildings like halls and art galleries should be preserved even though if it's costly, while many believe they should be converted into modern buildings. This essay will discuss both the sides and give my opinion with relevant examples.

To begin with, many individuals have argued that civic centres and exhibition centres should be restored even if it's expenditure cost is high. They believe that by maintaining certain architectural monuments like art galleries and halls will provide historical knowledge in the future and increase tourist visit in the country. The future generation will have physical structures to see and know what happened in the past; also if a few cultural centres are revitalized it will attract people from all over the world increasing the countries economy. For example, the Taj Mahal in India is a historical structure from the 18th century and tourist from all over the world come there to witness the amazing hand carving done on it which in turn promotes the economy of the country. As a result, working towards storing valuable structures will eventually help the citizens in the future.

On the other hand, some believe that government should replace them with new modern buildings. This will help in increasing the housing facility and utilize space. If town centres and art galleries are demolished and new structures are made it will create more space for people to live and utilize the area for everyday use. For instance, if there is an old building which is sealed and not used for the past many years it would be better that government sells the land to a builder and utilize the area for making apartments which will create more housing for local people.

In my opinion, protecting generational arts and halls; and leveraging them to build new buildings are equally important because there are times when safeguarding a few ancient places can help educate people and by viewing it they advocate it physically; while selling them to create something that helps in daily basis. For example, giving away a land that has not been used for years and building a school can help the city to utilize it to its fullest.

To conclude, both saving and replacing town halls and art galleries play an important role for a country in terms of providing historical knowledge and enhancing economic conditions while it can also make use of the place by creating something that can be used for daily life essentials.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The response addresses all parts of the prompt, discussing both views and providing a clear personal opinion. The ideas are relevant, such as the economic benefits of tourism versus the practical need for housing. However, the development is somewhat uneven. The argument for modernization is less detailed than the argument for preservation, and the personal opinion in the fourth paragraph is slightly repetitive, restating points already made. To reach a higher band, ensure that the personal opinion is more distinct and that the supporting arguments for both sides are balanced in depth and complexity.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate distinct ideas. Cohesive devices such as 'To begin with', 'On the other hand', and 'For instance' are used to guide the reader. However, there are instances where the flow is slightly mechanical, and some transitions between sentences within paragraphs could be smoother. For example, the transition in the fourth paragraph regarding the 'equally important' nature of the two views is a bit clunky. Overall, the progression of ideas is clear and easy to follow.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, allowing the writer to express ideas clearly. There is an attempt to use topic-specific vocabulary like 'revitalized', 'architectural monuments', and 'leveraging'. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'huge deal of argument' (instead of 'significant debate') and 'expenditure cost' (redundant). Additionally, 'generational arts' is not a standard collocation in this context. While the range is sufficient to convey meaning, more precise and sophisticated vocabulary would be required for a higher band score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as 'even though if it's costly' (incorrect conjunction usage), 'tourist from all over the world' (missing pluralization), and 'utilize the area for making apartments' (slightly awkward phrasing). Punctuation is generally functional, though there are some issues with comma usage in complex sentences. While these errors do not impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score. Increasing the variety of error-free complex structures would improve the overall grammatical profile.
