Student answer (Band 6.5)
The debate over restoring historical buildings reflects our societal values. While some argues that replacement of old buildings to new buildings by the government, others prioritize over renovating and restoring historical buildings like town halls and art galleries. Both percepectives contain valid arguments that merit careful examination. This essay will explore both views with reasons and examples.
Commencing with, proponents claim that older buildings should be preserved and renovated. One of the reasons for this claim is tourism. Restoring and renovating monuments will attract tourism which ultimately results in rise in GDP of the country. For instance, a substantial growth in GDP was observed in countries like Japan, China and South Korea who have preserved historical structures. Moreover, a practical approach for educating young generation about history is another reason why historical buildings need to be preserved. The new young generation is unaware of history and instead of abolishing old monuments, upgrading it will enhance their knowledge. Hence, preserving the old historical pieces will help both on national level and individual level.
Conversely, advocates for replacements of these buildings to new ones are surging significantly. One reason could be to the cost. To restore older structures, high budget is required. For instance, human resources, modern technology and high power resources are required to restore these buildings. Moreover, some buildings cannot be restored as most of the historical structures have relatively less durability than modern structures, whereas, it is easier to construct new buildings. Therefore, the expenditure on restoring historical buildings is more than constructing new ones.
In conclusion, as for my opinion, I hold a largely favorable view for restoring the historical buildings because it will boost country's economy.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5
The response addresses all parts of the prompt, discussing both views and providing a clear personal opinion. The ideas are relevant, such as the economic benefits of tourism versus the high costs of restoration. However, the development is somewhat uneven. The argument for replacement is less detailed than the argument for preservation, and the conclusion is quite brief, failing to fully synthesise the points discussed. To reach a higher band, ensure that the counter-arguments are explored with equal depth and that the conclusion provides a more comprehensive summary of the main points.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0
The essay is logically organised into clear paragraphs, each with a distinct focus. Cohesive devices are used, such as 'Commencing with', 'Moreover', and 'Conversely', which help guide the reader through the argument. However, some transitions feel slightly mechanical or repetitive. Additionally, there are minor issues with referencing; for example, in the second paragraph, 'upgrading it' refers back to 'old monuments' (plural), creating a slight lack of agreement. Overall, the progression of ideas is clear, and the paragraphing is appropriate for the task.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, with some attempts at more sophisticated language like 'proponents', 'monuments', and 'expenditure'. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'replacement of old buildings to new buildings' (should be 'with') and 'high power resources'. The range is sufficient to convey meaning, but it lacks the flexibility and precision required for a higher band. Improving the variety of collocations and ensuring more natural phrasing would significantly enhance the quality of the writing.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are several grammatical errors throughout the text. For instance, 'While some argues' (subject-verb agreement error), 'prioritize over renovating' (incorrect preposition), and 'the new young generation' (redundant). Punctuation is generally functional, but there are minor slips. To improve, focus on subject-verb agreement and refining the use of prepositions. The majority of sentences are understandable, but the frequency of errors prevents a higher score.
