Student answer (Band 6.0)
It is often argued by a few individuals that ancient buildings should be preserved, however, others believe that new modern buildings should replaced by the old buildings. Both views have their own importance because ancient buildings aid in preserving the culture of ancient times, yet newly constructed places provide better living standard. In my opinion, the former stament has more weightage as it creates employment. This essay will discuss the same before coming to a reasoned conclusion.
The most prominent advantage of restoring old buildings is keeping people connected to their culture. To explain, art galleries are beneficial for individuals to get exposure for the
ancient time as they can easily learn how people lived in the past, Morever, restoring art galleries can help to generate jobs . Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
The essay addresses both views and provides a clear personal opinion. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited. For instance, the argument regarding employment is mentioned but not fully explored with convincing depth. The conclusion is also quite brief and does not effectively summarise the main points discussed in the body paragraphs. To reach a higher band, ensure that each supporting point is fully extended with more detailed reasoning and specific examples, and ensure the conclusion reflects the depth of the preceding arguments.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The essay is organised into logical paragraphs, and there is a clear progression of ideas. Cohesive devices such as 'To explain', 'To exemplify', and 'Nevertheless' are used to link sentences. However, some transitions feel slightly mechanical, and there are minor issues with punctuation, such as the comma splice in '...past, Morever, restoring...' and the trailing comma at the end of the second paragraph. Improving the variety and natural flow of linking words would enhance the overall coherence.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, but it lacks the precision and range required for higher bands. There are some awkward collocations and word choices, such as 'replaced by the old buildings' (which contradicts the intended meaning) and 'weightage' (which is less common in formal academic writing). Phrases like 'more knowledge' and 'make people life better' are slightly unnatural. Expanding your range to include more sophisticated synonyms and idiomatic collocations would significantly improve your score.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are several grammatical errors, including subject-verb agreement issues ('buildings have better structured') and missing articles or incorrect word forms ('people life better'). Punctuation errors, such as the misuse of commas and capitalization after commas, are frequent. To improve, focus on proofreading for basic grammatical accuracy and ensuring that complex sentence structures are constructed correctly without errors.
