Student answer (Band 6.0)

Some people think the historic buildings like town halls and art galleries should be repaired and preserved rather than how much it cost but, others believe that authorities can demolish the old buildings and build new modern one instead. I think old buildings should be restored as they lets us us remind our historic past.

Old buildings have historical cultural values that how it was established in past. If we destroy them we will be unable to explain the upcoming generations about our past that how our city is formed. For example: if our city is named after any culture belief or tradition and our children ask us for deep explanation than how we explain them if we destroy it. So ,to keep remember about tradition and history we have to keep them. Moreover, these buildings can also become source of income for government if they repair them as tourists also visits to see the places which is related to history to gain more knowledge about that specific place. As authorities can set entry ticket fee to see that place from inside properly.

On the other hand, if government construct new buildings it will provide better facilities to the people who live there. As modern buildings have better technology, acn provide more space to build office and public services. This help the people living in that cities to find new jobs in the office and access to various facilities like banks, schools and hospitals.Additionally, these buildings also provide more safety because very old buildings may have structural problems and can get destroy any time which can cause the injury to public if someone is there during the accident. So, it's better to construct the new ones.

To conclude, I believe that old buildings should not be demolish because it has historic past and our cultural values which is difficult to replace. However, if the building is not safe and can fall down any time in that case government can construct new buildings on that area.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The response addresses all parts of the prompt, discussing both views and providing a clear personal opinion. The ideas are relevant, such as the cultural value of historical buildings versus the functional benefits of modern infrastructure. However, the development of these ideas is somewhat limited. For instance, the argument regarding tourism is a good point, but it could be expanded with more specific detail. The conclusion introduces a nuanced position—suggesting that restoration is preferred unless the building is structurally unsafe—which is a positive feature. To reach a higher band, ensure that each point is fully extended with more sophisticated reasoning and concrete examples.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay is logically organized into clear paragraphs, each focusing on a specific aspect of the prompt. There is a clear progression of ideas from the introduction to the body paragraphs and the conclusion. Cohesive devices such as 'Moreover', 'On the other hand', and 'Additionally' are used to link ideas, although some transitions feel slightly mechanical. Referencing is generally clear, though there are occasional lapses in flow due to sentence-level errors. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the different viewpoints, which helps the reader follow the argument easily.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary is adequate for the task, allowing the student to express ideas clearly. There is an attempt to use topic-specific vocabulary like 'demolish', 'structural problems', and 'cultural values'. However, the range is somewhat limited, and there are instances of awkward phrasing, such as 'lets us us remind our historic past' and 'how it was established in past'. Some word choices are repetitive, and there is a lack of more sophisticated, academic collocations. To improve, the student should focus on using more precise synonyms and ensuring that word forms are used correctly in context.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are frequent grammatical errors, particularly with subject-verb agreement ('it lets us', 'tourists also visits'), article usage, and sentence fragments ('As modern buildings have better technology, acn provide...'). Punctuation is also inconsistent, with some missing spaces after commas and incorrect capitalization. While these errors do not prevent the reader from understanding the message, they are frequent enough to limit the score. Increasing the variety of error-free complex sentences and proofreading for basic grammatical accuracy would significantly improve the score.
