Student answer (Band 6.5)
While it is believed by some that the historical buildings ought to be preserved although it could be expensive, including town halls or art galleries, others oppose this and they believe such buildings should be replaced with modern buildings by authorities. Even though restoring old buildings can be challenging sometimes, in my opinion it brings several benefits.
One main reason why some people support the idea to protect the ancient buildings is that they are great source of history. When these buildings would be preserved instead of simply demolishing them, they can save the culture, tradition and history of a particular place. Due to this, future generation might be educated about the past life of their ancestors through these buildings.
However, people who say that modern buildings ought to be constructed rather than repairing the old ones is because of lack of space. The old buildings cover a lot of space which may be utilized by constructing new buildings in a modern style. In this way, the land can be used in order to accommodate a large number of people.
In my opinion, although governments sometimes face financial issues while preserving historical buildings, I still believe they brings a considerable amount of benefits not only for the local people but also for the country. If these buildings would be restored, they attract a lot of visitors from local areas as well as all over the world in order to visit such places. Along with educating people about the history of the particular place, it would contribute in the economy of the nation as well.
In conclusion, despite having some issues to maintain old buildings, I believe that these are more beneficial for educating people about history and boost the economy of the local area.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5
The response addresses all parts of the prompt, discussing both viewpoints and providing a clear personal opinion. The ideas are relevant, such as the cultural value of historical buildings versus the practical need for space. However, the development of these ideas is somewhat limited. For instance, the argument regarding the 'lack of space' is a bit generic and could have been supported with more specific examples or deeper analysis. The position is consistent throughout the essay, and the conclusion effectively summarizes the main points. To reach a higher band, the student should aim to expand on the implications of their arguments with more depth and nuance.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0
The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Each paragraph has a central topic, such as the benefits of preservation or the arguments for modernization. Cohesive devices are used, such as 'However', 'In my opinion', and 'In conclusion', which help the reader follow the flow of ideas. However, some transitions are a bit mechanical, and the referencing is occasionally repetitive. The paragraphing is appropriate, and the progression of ideas is generally smooth, though the connection between the second and third paragraphs could be more sophisticated to improve the overall flow.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
The vocabulary used is generally adequate for the task, allowing the student to express their ideas clearly. There is an attempt to use topic-specific vocabulary like 'demolishing', 'preserve', and 'modernization'. However, the range is somewhat limited, and there is a tendency to repeat words like 'buildings' and 'people' frequently. Some collocations are slightly unnatural, such as 'contribute in the economy' (should be 'contribute to the economy'). To improve, the student should incorporate more varied synonyms and more precise academic collocations to demonstrate a wider range of lexical control.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
The student uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are several grammatical errors throughout the text. For example, 'they brings a considerable amount' (subject-verb agreement error) and 'If these buildings would be restored' (incorrect conditional structure). There are also issues with article usage and prepositions, such as 'great source of history' (missing 'a'). While these errors do not impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score. Increasing the accuracy of complex sentence structures and refining subject-verb agreement will significantly improve the score.
