Student answer (Band 6.0)

It is a topic of debate by some that historic buildings such as town halls and art galleries should be repaired even at an expense, while others suggest that it should completely be demolished and complementary constuction to be done by the official bodies. Furtherby in the essay will discuss both perspectives and I believe certain historic sites should be conserved, keeping in consideration the original art work is not changed.

On the first hand city halls and museums are some places where our history is stored and teaches about our history, wheather it is art, people, culture or heritage. For an instance, the Gandhi gallery in India, a place where any history associated with our freedom fighter Mahatma Gandhi and others is conserved which is visited by many from local to international travellers. In addition, museums are a tourist spot which promotes revenue earnings for the country's economy. Since these bulidings have been standing for over time they might be damaged and may require restoration which can been seen costly.

However, those old buildings that have lost its value but yet hold some valuable items, they can be migrated to different buildings without having to lose the inner values of the items within the buildings. Some believe that buildings new structure may be effective as this can justify its use and be more beneficial ot everyone around.

In conclusion, municipal buildings and village hall bring are a means of revenue helping to boost the economy and also provide a sense of connecting people to our history. Therefore, they should not be impaired. However, valueless buildings could be demolished and the place made more useful.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses both sides of the argument and provides a clear personal opinion in the introduction and conclusion. However, the development of ideas is somewhat uneven. While the benefits of restoration are supported by an example (the Gandhi gallery), the counter-argument regarding modern buildings is less developed and lacks specific examples or deeper analysis. The essay covers all parts of the prompt, but the reasoning remains quite general in places, which limits the depth of the discussion. To improve, ensure that both perspectives are explored with equal weight and provide more detailed explanations for the points raised.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is organized into logical paragraphs, each with a clear focus. There is an attempt to use cohesive devices such as 'On the first hand', 'In addition', and 'However'. However, some of these transitions are slightly awkward or non-standard, such as 'Furtherby in the essay' and 'On the first hand' (which should be 'On the one hand'). The progression of ideas is generally clear, but the referencing is occasionally imprecise, such as the use of 'it' in the first paragraph, which lacks a clear antecedent. Overall, the structure is functional but requires more sophisticated linking words to achieve a higher band.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, allowing the writer to express their ideas clearly. There are some attempts to use topic-specific vocabulary like 'restored', 'demolished', 'heritage', and 'revenue earnings'. However, there are several instances of imprecise word choice and collocation errors, such as 'complementary constuction to be done', 'impaired' (when referring to buildings), and 'migrated' (used incorrectly for moving artifacts). Spelling errors, such as 'wheather', 'bulidings', and 'ot', also occur. To improve, focus on using words in their correct context and proofreading for basic spelling accuracy.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are frequent grammatical errors, particularly with subject-verb agreement ('city halls and museums are... teaches', 'buildings... has lost its value') and article usage. Some sentences are structurally awkward, such as 'It is a topic of debate by some that...', which is wordy and unnatural. While the meaning is generally conveyed, the frequency of errors in basic grammar and sentence construction prevents the writing from reaching a higher band. Focusing on sentence variety and ensuring subject-verb consistency would significantly improve the quality of the writing.
