Student answer (Band 6.5)

Few people believe that the traditional buildings like town halls and art galleries, should be rebuilt, even if it can be costly whereas other argue that the legal authorities should replace them with the modern infrastructure. In this essay, I will discuss both the views and will give my opinion.

To commence with, the old buildings should be restored because it hold cultural and moral values. To explain, these kind of buildings are constructed with the fact to give information and knowledge about past to the people who come for a visit. For example, Shahi Museum, situated in Patiala, India displays the weapons and artworks which kings used to admire at their ruling time. Hence, to know about the history, traditional architectures should be saved.

On the other hand, in this modern era, the demand of new universities, office buildings, shopping centres, etcetera, has been increased. To elaborate, the development in the population requires increase in the infrastructures of the country. For instance, it is very common nowadays that the children are leaving their own country for the studies because either there are less universities in their countries or they couldn’t get an admission because of the large number of students on a waiting list for the admissions.

To conclude, I believe that, although, it is necessary to preserve and learn about our traditions, yet, it is a need of an hour to go with the flow and built new buildings as per public demand. Government should keep the balance between both.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The response addresses all parts of the prompt by discussing both views and providing a clear personal opinion. The ideas are relevant, such as the cultural value of historical buildings versus the practical need for modern infrastructure. However, the development of these ideas is somewhat limited. For instance, the argument regarding the need for new universities is a bit generic and could have been more deeply explored to reach a higher band. The position is consistent throughout, and the conclusion effectively synthesizes the two perspectives. To improve, ensure that each supporting example is more thoroughly explained to demonstrate a deeper level of critical thinking.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, two body paragraphs, and a conclusion. The use of cohesive devices such as 'To commence with', 'On the other hand', and 'To conclude' helps guide the reader through the argument. However, some transitions feel slightly mechanical, and the referencing within paragraphs could be smoother. For example, the link between the need for new buildings and the specific issue of students leaving the country is clear, but the flow between sentences could be more sophisticated. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the two distinct viewpoints.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, allowing the writer to express their ideas clearly. There are some attempts at less common vocabulary, such as 'traditional architectures' and 'modern infrastructure'. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'it hold cultural and moral values' (should be 'they hold') and 'at their ruling time' (should be 'during their reign'). The range is sufficient to convey the intended meaning, but more precise and varied vocabulary would be required to achieve a higher band score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are several grammatical errors that occur throughout the text. Examples include subject-verb agreement issues ('it hold' instead of 'they hold'), article usage ('the demand of new universities' instead of 'the demand for'), and awkward phrasing ('the development in the population requires increase in the infrastructures'). These errors do not impede communication, but they are frequent enough to prevent a higher score. Focusing on proofreading for basic subject-verb agreement and prepositional usage would be beneficial.
