Student answer (Band 6.5)

Ancient buildings, town halls and art galleries should be restored according to certain population while other believe that they should be replaced. I think that certain old monuments should be preserved and maintained that are valuable and are in good condition. While monuments that are structurally unstable and posses risk to life should be replaced with modern buildings.

Firstly old monuments buildings, town halls and art galleries should be preserved and restored and maintained in their original form and structure. As they are very valuable in preserving history, maintaining old culture, architecture. By preserving them the future generation can learn about the past and experience it rather then only gaining knowledge only from the book. In present day there are various forts, libraries and various other old structures that are well preserved and tourists from all over the globe visit them. Preserving them may be costly initially while in the long term revenue can be made from them by charging fees from tourists and the cost of restoration can be easily recovered.

Small business and local employment is also seen around these structures. However this approach is only beneficial to the buildings that are structurally strong, stable and valuable. For example around the globe there are numerous such buildings that are preserved in their original condition.

On the other hand the monuments that are very old and are not structurally strong and stable which posses risk to life and property should be replaced. Considering the monuments that have little historic importance should be replaced with the modern buildings. In buildings where restoration is not possible due to structural limitation should be avoided.

To conclude I will say that restoration should be done where it is practical, structure is stable and there is no risk of life from that building. The buildings that are very old and weak and have very little or no value should be replaced with modern architecture.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

You have addressed all parts of the prompt by discussing both views and providing a clear personal opinion. Your position is consistent throughout the essay. The ideas are relevant, particularly the economic argument regarding tourism and the safety argument regarding structural integrity. However, the development of these ideas is somewhat repetitive; for instance, the point about structural safety is mentioned in the introduction, the body paragraphs, and the conclusion. To reach a higher band, try to expand on the 'why' and 'how' of your arguments with more specific examples rather than restating the same points. Overall, the response is well-focused on the task requirements.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and conclusion. You use basic cohesive devices such as 'Firstly', 'On the other hand', and 'To conclude' to guide the reader. However, the flow between sentences is sometimes mechanical, and the use of referencing could be more sophisticated. For example, in the second paragraph, the transition between the benefits of tourism and the mention of small businesses is abrupt. Improving the variety of linking words and ensuring that each paragraph has a clear, singular focus would enhance the overall cohesion of your writing.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'structurally unstable', 'historic importance', and 'modern architecture'. However, there are instances of word-choice errors and awkward phrasing, such as 'posses risk to life' (should be 'pose a risk') and 'according to certain population' (should be 'according to some people'). You also rely on repetitive phrasing, such as using 'monuments' and 'buildings' frequently. To improve, focus on using more precise collocations and synonyms to avoid repetition and increase the sophistication of your lexical range.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors that occasionally distract the reader. Common issues include missing articles (e.g., 'in present day'), subject-verb agreement errors (e.g., 'other believe'), and punctuation mistakes. While your meaning is always clear, the frequency of these minor errors prevents the essay from reaching a higher band. To improve, pay closer attention to pluralization, article usage, and verb forms. Proofreading for these specific, recurring errors will significantly improve your accuracy.
