Student answer (Band 6.0)

Some individuals believe that previously constructed houses, like town hall and art galleries should be restored at any cost. While other states that, new construction must be done. The old buildings has limited space and no parking facility, and the new construction can be planned very well and accommodate more people and vehicles. I agree that the new construction should take place for new generation instead restore.

The old building, like town hall and art galleries is restored with huge financial support, though the space is not enough to handle any event if town residents arrive at same time. Which causes, traffic and crowd on the road. For example, recently a Christmas event held in Kitchener restored town hall, around two million dollar invested. Which has the capacity of five hundred people, but around thousand guests arrived due to that, public came on the road and blocked the way to traffic. I disagree with the idea of restoration.

The authorities should construct a modern buildings instead restoration of old houses, because today construction and architectural designs are advanced with technology. This gives more spacious and parking facilities at a fair investment and more business. for instance, in Cambridge there was an old museum, the governor demolished and constructed a new building with advanced technology like security check, biometric, camera surveillance etc., attracted huge public visits due to that, the sales has increased double . So, I agree with new construction idea instead of restoration.

In conclusion, the restoration of old building it costs more. I believe that investing money in restoring is wasting public tax amount. The modern construction gives more option and security. I totally agree with constructing new building instead of restoring.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses both views and provides a clear personal opinion throughout. The ideas are relevant, such as the mention of parking facilities and modern architectural benefits. However, the development is somewhat repetitive, and the arguments could be more nuanced. For instance, the discussion on the 'Kitchener town hall' example is specific but lacks a broader perspective on the cultural or historical value of buildings, which is a key part of the 'restoration' argument. While the position is consistent, the supporting ideas are slightly underdeveloped, focusing heavily on practical utility rather than balancing the two sides of the debate effectively. The response meets the requirements of the prompt but remains at a basic level of analysis.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is organized into logical paragraphs, each with a clear focus. There is a progression of ideas from the introduction to the conclusion. However, the use of cohesive devices is often mechanical or slightly awkward. For example, the phrase 'Which causes, traffic and crowd' is grammatically incorrect and disrupts the flow. Additionally, the transition between sentences is sometimes abrupt, such as the start of the third paragraph. While the paragraphing is appropriate, the internal cohesion within paragraphs needs more variety and precision to move beyond a basic level of linking words.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary is adequate for the task but lacks the range and precision required for higher bands. There are several instances of awkward word choices, such as 'previously constructed houses' to refer to public buildings, and 'public tax amount'. The student attempts to use some topic-specific vocabulary like 'demolished' and 'surveillance', but there are recurring issues with word forms and collocations (e.g., 'sales has increased double'). The range is sufficient to communicate the main points, but the lack of flexibility and the presence of errors in word choice limit the score to a 6.0.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The essay contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors that occasionally impede readability. Common issues include subject-verb agreement ('The old building... is restored', 'The old buildings has'), article usage ('the new construction', 'a modern buildings'), and sentence fragments ('Which causes, traffic and crowd on the road'). While the meaning is generally clear, the high frequency of these errors prevents the writing from reaching a higher band. To improve, the student should focus on basic sentence construction and proofreading for subject-verb agreement and pluralization.
