Student answer (Band 6.0)

Some people believe that old structures, such as town hall, art galleries, should be revived, although the cost of restoration is very high, and others think that government should build new buildings on same places. This essay will elucidate both views in subsequent paragraphs, and I will share my opinion in the conclusion.

On the one side, one section of society in the favor of restoring old buildings to save the history and art work for future generations. The old building, such as fort, palaces and museums are great piece of art work created by our ancestors. This art and history should be safely passed to our future generations so they can also image and feel proud about their roots and culture. Another reason is these sites attract tourism in country, that provides financial support to government and local business owners.

On the other side, some people think new buildings will be more safe, convenient and cost effective. All the old building made from stones and these building do not have good facilities, like air-conditions, washrooms and proper lighting system. Whereas, new buildings are build from man-made material, that is inexpensive and in new places it is easy to build facilities for visitors and special arrangements, as ramp for people who uses wheelchairs. Hence, above arguments prove new construction is beneficial compared to old buildings.

In Summary, Although some people think old places should be restored to save the history for our grandchildren, other think new building are cost effective and fulfil the modern needs. In my opinion old building should be maintained to save them and government should build new places around them to provide the facilities to visitors.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The essay addresses all parts of the prompt by discussing both viewpoints and providing a clear personal opinion. The ideas are relevant, such as the cultural value of heritage versus the practical benefits of modern infrastructure. However, the development of these ideas is somewhat limited. For instance, the argument regarding tourism is mentioned but not fully explored with specific examples. The position is clear throughout, and the conclusion offers a balanced synthesis. To reach a higher band, you should aim to expand your supporting points with more detailed explanations or concrete examples to ensure the response is fully developed rather than just outlined.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs for each view, and a summary. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate distinct ideas. Cohesive devices such as 'On the one side', 'Another reason', and 'In Summary' are used to guide the reader. However, some transitions feel slightly mechanical, and there are occasional issues with referencing, such as 'these building' referring back to a plural noun. The flow is generally smooth, but more sophisticated linking words would improve the overall cohesion and make the progression of ideas feel more natural and less formulaic.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary is adequate for the task, allowing you to express your ideas clearly. You use some topic-specific terms like 'restoration', 'ancestors', and 'infrastructure' (implied). However, there are several instances of word-choice errors and awkward collocations, such as 'revived' instead of 'restored' or 'preserved', and 'on same places' instead of 'on the same sites'. Additionally, there are minor grammatical errors in word forms, such as 'the old building' (should be plural). To improve, focus on learning collocations and using more precise academic vocabulary to convey your points with greater sophistication.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are frequent grammatical errors, particularly with articles ('the government', 'a country'), pluralization ('these building'), and subject-verb agreement ('people who uses'). Some sentences are slightly disjointed due to these errors. To achieve a higher band, you need to increase the frequency of error-free sentences and demonstrate more consistent control over complex structures. Proofreading for basic grammatical accuracy, especially regarding noun-verb agreement and article usage, would significantly enhance the quality of your writing.
