Student answer (Band 6.0)
Old buildings, such as town halls, monuments and art galleries play a significant role in teaching the history of our nation to children. While some people believe that old buildings should be restored by authorities, other think that it should be replaced with the new modern buildings. I have discussed both the views before presenting my opinion.
One important reason governments should focus on maintaining old buildings is that they provide valuable information about the history of nations to students. Although students can access information from the internet about monuments , they may not connect with them emotionally and physically. In addition, governments can charge fees from the visitors to maintain the buildings, which may reduce the financial pressure from authorities. As a result, it may also generate regional economy without demolishing old valuable buildings.
However, many residents argue that, they should be replaced with modern buildings because they are not safe for visitors and it also need huge financial assistance to restore them. Furthermore, the rising population is becoming a major concern for the several cities so if states allocate that land for new residential construction, which may solve the serious concern. As a result, local authorities may experience lower financial burden and invest that money for new infrastructure projects for the well-being of the residents.
In conclusion, although, old buildings are significant source of information, we should also focus on the rising issues in the country. Hence, governments should focus on both educational purpose and shelter of the growing population.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
The response addresses both sides of the argument and provides a personal opinion, fulfilling the task requirements. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited. For instance, the argument regarding the 'emotional connection' to historical buildings is a good point, but it lacks specific examples or deeper elaboration. The conclusion is also quite brief and does not fully synthesise the arguments presented. To reach a higher band, you should aim to expand on your supporting points with more concrete examples or logical consequences, ensuring that your position is clearly maintained throughout the entire essay.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The essay is logically organised into paragraphs, with a clear introduction, two body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Cohesive devices such as 'In addition', 'However', and 'Furthermore' are used to link ideas. However, there are some instances where the flow is slightly mechanical or awkward, such as the sentence 'I have discussed both the views before presenting my opinion', which is unnecessary in an essay. Additionally, the referencing in the third paragraph ('they should be replaced') is slightly ambiguous as it refers back to 'many residents' rather than the buildings themselves. Overall, the progression of ideas is clear.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'demolishing', 'financial assistance', and 'infrastructure projects'. There are some minor errors in word choice and collocation, such as 'generate regional economy' (should be 'stimulate the regional economy') and 'shelter of the growing population' (should be 'housing for the growing population'). While the vocabulary is sufficient to convey your meaning clearly, it lacks the precision and sophistication required for higher band scores. Focusing on more natural collocations will help improve your lexical range.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as subject-verb agreement issues ('other think that it should be replaced' should be 'others think they should be replaced') and punctuation errors (e.g., unnecessary commas in 'although, old buildings'). While these errors are noticeable, they do not impede communication. To improve, you should focus on proofreading for basic subject-verb agreement and ensuring that complex sentences are constructed with greater accuracy, particularly regarding the use of articles and pluralisation.
