Student answer (Band 6.5)

Many Individuals believe that ancient monuments, like town halls and museums, should be renovated, which can be costly. Whereas others argue that governments should replace them with new, modernized buildings.

It is undeniable that old buildings show the legacy and art of the people who built such monuments. Therefore, it teaches various kinds of rules, history, and art, through which the newer generation gets to learn the history of their hometown and their leader as well. For Instance, the Statue of Liberty shows how to maintain peace and live in unity for every individual. Apart from that, if governments restore them, it also increases tourism to that place, which will help officials as well as the local population that resides in the area. Individuals who own a business will get support from tourism, as they will buy something from their shops.

On the other hand, old buildings need too much funding to be renovated and reconstructed. The main reason the government should build new buildings is the increasing population, this, in turns into a good decision because housing is a major problem these days faced by a good chunk of people in every nation. Another important aspect is time in today's era, not every individual has enough time to visit art galleries in their leisure time. They would prefer to go out and have dinner, or they will go out to hang out to some other places, like as bars, playing sports like golf.

In Conclusion, I would choose to restore those old buildings as they represent history. Moreover, it would be great for the local people as well, as they will receive financial support while tourists visit that place. This will be beneficial for the majority of individuals

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The response addresses all parts of the prompt by discussing both views and providing a clear personal opinion. The ideas are relevant, such as the cultural value of heritage versus the practical need for modern housing. However, the development is somewhat uneven. The argument for restoration is well-supported with points about tourism and history, but the counter-argument regarding modern buildings is less focused, shifting abruptly from housing needs to the leisure habits of modern individuals. To reach a higher band, ensure that each supporting point is fully explored and directly linked to the core argument rather than introducing tangential ideas like golf or dining habits.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay is logically organized into clear paragraphs, each with a distinct focus. There is a progression of ideas from the introduction to the conclusion. Cohesive devices are used, such as 'Apart from that', 'On the other hand', and 'In Conclusion', which help guide the reader. However, some transitions are slightly mechanical or repetitive. For instance, the use of 'this' to refer back to previous ideas is sometimes ambiguous, and the connection between the need for housing and the lack of time to visit galleries is not smoothly integrated. Improving the variety of linking words would enhance the flow.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, allowing the writer to express their ideas clearly. There are some attempts at less common vocabulary, such as 'renovated', 'reconstructed', and 'undeniable'. However, there are instances of imprecise word choice and minor collocation errors, such as 'modernized buildings' (modern buildings is more natural) and 'hang out to some other places'. The range is sufficient to convey meaning, but more sophisticated or precise terminology would be required for a higher band score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are frequent grammatical errors, particularly with punctuation and sentence fragments. For example, the first paragraph contains a sentence fragment ('Whereas others argue...'), and there are issues with comma usage and article placement (e.g., 'in today's era'). Subject-verb agreement and preposition usage also show occasional slips. While these errors do not impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score. Focusing on sentence boundary control and proofreading for basic errors would be beneficial.
