Student answer (Band 6.0)

Undoubtedly, old monuments preserve the rich heritage of a nation. Although it costs an arm and a leg to renovate old structures like art galleries and town halls, people still favor it; on the other hand remaining people opine that the authorities should replace them with new. This essay will explain both viewpoints along with my opinion.

One school of thought believes that the government should invest money in the repair of old buildings such as art galleries and town halls. The reason for preserving, because such places keep the history, and heritage of any country so it should be renovated even if it not cost effective. For example, Taj Mahal is one of the seven wonders it promotes love and also a good source of income because people pay ticket to visit it. So, it is the rsponsiblity of the government officials to maintain a budget for the wear and tear of such places.

Other school of thought belive, instead of spending money on old buildings it is best to replace them with new because old monuments may fall any time if natural calamity occurs. So, it is better to demolish them and construct a tall strucuter at the same land which also serve other purposes. For example, an old art gallery in Nova Scotia is demolished and on the same piece of land one building is constructed with 10 floors to utilized the land for other purposes as well.

In my opinion, it is important to save the rich heritage and culture of the country by using cost effective measures to save the ancient places rather than constructed new.

In conclusion, it is better to repair the town halls and art galleries because they bring money and promote brotherhood in the whole world. Although old brick structures could fall any time but, the officials always tries to save vintage-styled structure for future generation.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses both viewpoints and provides a clear personal opinion. However, the development of ideas is somewhat uneven. The argument for restoration is supported by the example of the Taj Mahal, but the reasoning is slightly simplistic. The counter-argument regarding safety and land utility is relevant, but the example of the Nova Scotia building is vague and lacks sufficient detail to fully support the point. While the position is consistent, the essay would benefit from more depth in the analysis of the trade-offs between heritage preservation and modern urban development to reach a higher band.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay is organized into logical paragraphs, each with a clear focus. Cohesive devices are used, such as 'on the other hand', 'for example', and 'in conclusion', though some transitions feel a bit mechanical. The progression of ideas is generally clear, but the connection between sentences within paragraphs could be smoother. For instance, the transition between the mention of natural calamities and the construction of a 10-floor building is abrupt. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the different viewpoints and the writer's own opinion.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, with some attempts at more sophisticated phrasing like 'cost an arm and a leg' and 'natural calamity'. However, there are instances of awkward word choice and minor errors, such as 'remaining people opine' instead of 'others opine' and 'constructed new' instead of 'constructing new buildings'. The range is sufficient to convey meaning, but the lack of precision in some areas and repetitive use of basic structures limit the score. More variety in academic collocations would improve the overall quality.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors throughout, such as 'the reason for preserving, because such places keep...' (missing verb) and 'the officials always tries' (subject-verb agreement). Punctuation is also inconsistent, particularly with comma usage. While these errors do not significantly impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score. The writer demonstrates an ability to construct complex sentences, but control over these structures remains inconsistent.
