Student answer (Band 6.5)
In this era, old buildings as well as modern buildings are popular topic around the world . Fixing old architecture costs a lot money but i believe we should save important historic buildings and only replace the ones that are unsafe or not useful. I like to explain about this topic why the previous buildings should be restored as well as why the government should replace them.
On one hand , the old buildings like town halls and art galleries are important for history. they tell us about the history and make the city unique. When a city keeps its history, people feel proud about their culture. Also tourists like to visit old, beautiful places, which brings money to local businesses and shops. For instance, historical sites draw thousands of visitors each year which create a jobs for local tour guides and hotel staff.
On the other hand, new buildings have many advantages. Building new structures is cheaper than fixing very old ones. Modern buildings are safer and better for the environment because they use less electricity and heating. In addition, new buildings can hold more people and give us better space for offices, housing and public services. Additionally, new materials make these structures stronger against natural disasters like heavy rain, strong winds and earthquake.
From my perspective, new buildings are better because they offer more practical features, better safety and lower maintenance costs. However, we should still protect famous historic landmarks.
In conclusion, both sides have good points. Old buildings keep our history alive, while new buildings are safe and more practical for daily life.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5
The response addresses all parts of the prompt by discussing both views and providing a clear personal opinion. The ideas are relevant, such as the cultural value of old buildings versus the practical efficiency of modern ones. However, the development of these ideas is somewhat basic. For instance, the argument regarding environmental benefits of new buildings is mentioned but not fully explored. The position is clear throughout, though the conclusion slightly contradicts the body paragraphs by suggesting a balance, whereas the body paragraphs lean more heavily toward the benefits of new construction. To reach a higher band, you should aim to provide more nuanced examples and ensure your conclusion aligns perfectly with the arguments presented.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0
The essay is logically organized into clear paragraphs, each with a distinct focus. You use basic cohesive devices such as 'On one hand', 'On the other hand', 'Also', and 'In addition' to link ideas. While these are effective, the flow is occasionally mechanical. The referencing is generally clear, though some sentences feel slightly disjointed. To improve, try to use a wider variety of cohesive devices and ensure that the transition between your personal opinion and the summary in the conclusion is smoother. The paragraphing is appropriate and contributes to the overall readability of the response.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'architecture', 'historical sites', 'practical features', and 'maintenance costs'. There are some instances of slightly repetitive or simplistic phrasing, such as 'brings money' or 'good points'. While you attempt to use some topic-specific vocabulary, there is a lack of more sophisticated or idiomatic expressions that would elevate the response. Spelling is generally accurate, and the word choices are appropriate enough to convey your meaning clearly without causing any confusion for the reader.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is always clear, there are several grammatical errors, such as 'costs a lot money' (missing preposition), 'create a jobs' (article error), and 'earthquake' (should be plural). Punctuation is generally functional, but there are some inconsistencies with spacing around commas. You demonstrate control over basic grammar, but the frequency of minor errors prevents a higher score. To improve, focus on subject-verb agreement and the correct use of articles, and try to incorporate more complex sentence structures with greater precision.
