Student answer (Band 6.5)
It is believed by some that old buildings such as art galleries and historical town halls should be preserved at any cost. However, others support the idea of replacement. I believe that old buildings those have cultural and traditional values should be restored and others can be replaced with modern buildings.
The people who are in favor of keeping old buildings consider this idea because of the cultural and sentimental values these buildings provides. People are more likely to visit such places to acquire the knowledge of past events which help them to not only learn from the past mistakes but also to understand the human behaviour over time. Therefore, it encourages the young minds to stay connected with their roots and understand the significance of history. Maintaining such buildings at any cost is worthwhile while educating the children about their local and rich culture.
On the other hand, some people say that government should demolish such buildings and should invest in constructing modern buildings. Due to the increase in population, people need more places to settle with modern facilities so that they can get every service at one place. Old buildings need heavy investment for restoration which can be invested in other essential fields also such as education and transportation.
In my opinion, the town halls and old buildings with great historical values should be preserved as it attract tourism. People visit from different places to explore the local culture. Through such buildings they get to know about the local history. Apart from this, they invest on food, accommodation and shopping which boost the economy of nation.
In conclusion, although old buildings can create financial burden on governments, some buildings with traditional values should be saved for future generations and tourists . Others those have minor contribution can be used for constructing modern buildings.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
The response addresses all parts of the prompt by discussing both views and providing a clear personal opinion. The position is consistent throughout the essay. The ideas are relevant, such as the cultural value of buildings versus the practical need for modern infrastructure. However, the development of these ideas is somewhat general. For instance, the argument regarding tourism could be strengthened with a more specific example or a more detailed explanation of how restoration specifically impacts local economies. Overall, the response is well-structured and fulfills the requirements of the task effectively.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0
The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Each paragraph has a central theme. Cohesive devices such as 'However', 'Therefore', 'On the other hand', and 'In conclusion' are used to guide the reader through the argument. While the flow is generally smooth, some transitions are slightly mechanical. Referencing is mostly clear, though there are minor issues with relative pronouns, such as 'Others those have minor contribution', which slightly disrupts the cohesion. Overall, the paragraphing is appropriate and the progression of ideas is logical.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
The vocabulary is sufficient to convey the intended meaning with some flexibility. There is an attempt to use topic-specific vocabulary like 'demolish', 'restoration', 'sentimental values', and 'infrastructure'. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'invest on food' (should be 'invest in') and 'boost the economy of nation' (should be 'the nation'). While the range is adequate for the task, it lacks the precision and sophistication required for higher bands. The errors do not impede communication, but they do highlight a need for more precise lexical control.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
The essay demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There is a good attempt at using complex sentences, but these are often marred by grammatical slips. Examples include 'old buildings those have cultural' (should be 'those that have') and 'these buildings provides' (subject-verb agreement error). Additionally, there are minor punctuation and article usage issues throughout the text. While the meaning is always clear and the errors do not significantly impede communication, the frequency of these small grammatical slips prevents the essay from reaching a higher band score.
