Student answer (Band 6.5)
Many people argue that old infrastructures, such as art galleries and city halls should be renovated. Whereas others argue that those should be replaced by new buildings. I agree with the latter view, as new structures require less repairs and provides longer stability.
Some people believe that it is important to preserve our heritage through old buildings. Some of these structures represent decades old carving and architecture skills. It is necessary to pass down these architectures to the next generation. On top of that, they believe that the amount invested in restoration of these buildings can be recovered by charging small entry fees. A lot of people will spend a little bit of money to see old architectures and support these historical sites. Because of these reasons, they believe that old infrastructures should be renovated regardless of its cost.
On the other hand, others argue that government should focus on spending tax money wisely. While old buildings will require constant maintenance, latest architecture will require less maintenance. Hence, instead of spending more money in renovations, government should build new buildings. In addition to this, latest buildings represents advancements in the field of architecture. Nowadays, it is possible to build monuments which consume less electricity, provide more sunlight, and naturally cooled. It is a good idea to showcase these technologies to the world by building public infrastructures.
To conclude, many people with emotional connections to old monuments argues for their restoration without looking at the cost. However, I believe that by considering the cost and efforts to maintain those buildings, it is a good idea to replace them with infrastructures built with latest technologies.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
The response addresses all parts of the prompt, discussing both views and providing a clear personal opinion. The position is consistent throughout the essay. Ideas are relevant, such as the mention of heritage preservation versus cost-efficiency and modern technological advancements. However, some points could be further developed; for instance, the argument regarding 'entry fees' is a bit simplistic and could benefit from more depth regarding the economic reality of maintenance costs. Overall, the response is well-structured and fulfills the requirements of the task effectively.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0
The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, two body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the two opposing viewpoints. Cohesive devices such as 'On the other hand', 'In addition to this', and 'To conclude' are used to guide the reader through the argument. While the flow is generally smooth, some transitions feel slightly mechanical. Referencing is generally clear, though the use of 'those' in the first paragraph could be more precise to ensure the reader immediately identifies the subject matter.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
The range of vocabulary is adequate for the task. The student uses topic-specific terms like 'renovated', 'heritage', 'maintenance', and 'infrastructures'. There are some minor inaccuracies in word choice, such as 'latest architecture' instead of 'modern architecture' or 'newly constructed buildings'. Additionally, the phrase 'requires less repairs' is slightly unnatural; 'requires fewer repairs' would be more accurate. Despite these minor issues, the vocabulary is sufficient to convey the intended meaning clearly and demonstrates an attempt to use a variety of terms related to the topic.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as subject-verb agreement issues (e.g., 'provides longer stability' should be 'provide', and 'monuments... argues' should be 'argue'). There are also minor errors with articles and prepositions, such as 'spending more money in renovations' instead of 'on renovations'. While these errors are noticeable, they do not impede communication. The student demonstrates a reasonable control of grammar, but more consistent accuracy in complex structures would be needed for a higher band score.
