Student answer (Band 6.0)

In recent years, humankind has evolved to a great extent, resulting in different mindsets thus different thoughts to believe. Some people say old buildings like town halls should be renovated while some believe authorities should replace them with new modern buildings.

Those who argue in the favor of old buildings are correct to some extent as these monuments and art galleries depict the true picture of history to present world. It can be costly for Government to restore these but it is a practical way to give history an another life for upcoming many years. Current generation will be able to see and feel art, craft and architecture made by our past generations. For example, there are many old buildings around the downtown Toronto converted into restaurants and museums where tourists and local people spend and feel the ancient vibe. Tickets and daily sales are helping city officials to cover the cost spent on these projects which is a good outcome.

On the other side, believes for replacing old structures with new modern buildings is making its space on a different pace. Due to increasing population and changing environmental conditions new technology equipped buildings are easy to maintain and more safer for the public. As there are newly build photo galleries which are tornado resistant and can hold large visiting population in a single row. This is more sustainable in every aspect from fundings to raw materials used for building the structure.

To conclude, evolution of time results in different views from society on every different topic. Some believe in history while some like to live with modern facilities. I prefer that the balance of both of the opinion we will be a smart move for the development with living in modern era with live history.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The response addresses all parts of the task, discussing both views and providing a clear personal opinion. The ideas are relevant, such as the mention of historical preservation versus modern sustainability. However, the development of these ideas is somewhat limited. For instance, the argument regarding 'new technology equipped buildings' is mentioned but not fully explored with specific examples beyond 'tornado resistant' structures. The position is clear throughout, but the conclusion could be more robustly linked to the arguments presented in the body paragraphs to reach a higher band.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is logically organized into clear paragraphs, with an introduction, two body paragraphs, and a conclusion. The progression of ideas is generally easy to follow. However, the use of cohesive devices is sometimes mechanical or slightly awkward, such as 'On the other side, believes for replacing old structures... is making its space on a different pace.' Additionally, some transitions between sentences feel abrupt. While the paragraphing is appropriate, the flow could be improved by using a wider variety of linking words to connect ideas more fluidly.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary is adequate for the task, allowing the writer to convey their meaning clearly. There are attempts to use less common vocabulary, such as 'renovated', 'monuments', and 'sustainable'. However, there are several instances of awkward word choice and collocation, such as 'making its space on a different pace' and 'give history an another life'. Some phrasing is slightly unnatural, which prevents the response from reaching a higher band. The range is sufficient for the task but lacks the precision and flexibility required for a higher score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are frequent grammatical errors, particularly with articles ('the' vs 'a'), subject-verb agreement, and word forms (e.g., 'newly build' instead of 'newly built', 'more safer' instead of 'safer'). These errors are noticeable but do not impede communication. To improve, the writer should focus on proofreading for basic grammatical accuracy and ensuring that complex structures are used with greater precision.
