Student answer (Band 6.0)

It is crystal clear that old buildings such as town halls and art galleries play crucial role in our live. Some people believe that we should save them. While, critics of this statement say that government should replace them with modern structure.

In this essay I will discuss both sides of reason before giving my personal opinion.

On the one hand, supporters of this statement that government should not replace classic building with modern building believe that old building depicts the history of that particular area and country. Those are the only way for upcoming generation to know about their history. Secondly, old building help to increase the number of tourists. For Instance, according to a report published by The United States, 20% of their income comes from old buildings and art museums.

On the other hand, Those who believe that modern buildings are more important rather than old buildings, because It help to make country developed. Finally, increasing number of accommodations every where, cause growing population. For example, if we see world report of The United Kingdom, behind growing houses prices the main concern is rise in human population.

In conclusion, I agree with this statement that old buildings play a big role in our live. We learn a lot about our history and our culture. We should take care of old buildings or monuments. Which present our past on global level. We can not only learn from history books, art galleries shows the reality of our past. For our new generation it is important.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The essay addresses both sides of the argument and provides a clear personal opinion in the conclusion. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited. For instance, the argument regarding modern buildings is underdeveloped, focusing on housing prices without clearly linking this to the necessity of replacing historical structures. While the prompt asks for a discussion of both views, the supporting examples, such as the '20% of income' statistic, lack specific context or clarity. To reach a higher band, you should expand on your reasoning with more nuanced explanations and ensure that your examples directly support the specific points being made in each paragraph.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is organised into logical paragraphs, and there is a clear progression of ideas from the introduction to the conclusion. You use basic cohesive devices such as 'On the one hand', 'On the other hand', and 'In conclusion' to signal shifts in the argument. However, some transitions are mechanical or slightly awkward, such as starting a sentence with 'While,' or 'Finally,' in a context where it does not fit the logical flow. Additionally, some referencing is unclear, such as the use of 'this statement' when referring to the prompt's topic. Improving the variety and precision of your linking words would enhance the flow.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

Your vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, allowing you to express your ideas clearly. You use some relevant topic-specific vocabulary like 'monuments', 'culture', and 'restored'. However, there are instances of imprecise word choice and collocation errors, such as 'modern structure' (should be plural), 'classic building' (should be 'historical' or 'heritage'), and 'growing houses prices' (should be 'rising house prices'). The range is somewhat limited, and you rely on repetitive phrasing. To improve, try to incorporate more sophisticated synonyms and collocations related to urban planning and historical preservation.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are frequent grammatical errors throughout the text. Common issues include subject-verb agreement ('old building depicts', 'old building help'), article usage ('the United Kingdom', 'a global level'), and pluralisation ('modern structure', 'every where'). Punctuation is also inconsistent, particularly with sentence fragments like 'Which present our past on global level.' To achieve a higher band, you need to focus on accuracy in basic grammar and increase the variety of complex structures while ensuring they remain error-free.
