IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Some people believe that old buildings, such as town halls and art galleries, should be restored, even though this can be costly. Others argue that governments should replace them with new, modern buildings.

Discuss both views and give your own opinion.

Student answer (Band 6.5)

It is often argued that many individuals think that old buildings, such as town halls and art galleries, should be renovated at any cost, while others hold a belief that governments should replace them with the new and modern buildings. Both arguments have valid reasons, and this essay will discuss both perspectives and explain why I strongly believe that old structures should be restored regardless of cost.

The most important reason is that it is our responsibility to preserve our ancient's work and appreciate it. There are several ancient landmarks which can reflect the cultural heritage and traditions. Therefore, it is our duty to preserve and maintain these old buildings such as town halls and art galleries at any cost. These historical work gives insight into the history and cultural traditions of particular regions. For example, the Laxmi villas palace is the largest castle in the city of Gujarat State, which maintained by the local government. Additionally, preservation of old structures can help new generation to gain knowledge about their native places. Moreover, restored buildings boost local economy by attract tourist. Overall, it would be a great idea to restored old buildings including town halls and art galleries.

However, some people argue that authorities should replace them with modern buildings due to several possible reasons. The main reason is increasing number of populations. Nowadays people may find difficulties to find a place to live in a city area, similarly it is not possible to commute every day from distant areas. Hence, it is reasonable to replace old structures with new and modern buildings. Another point is government should solve the recent concerns practically, instead of preserving the old buildings. Ultimately, modernization will help cities to grow in the future.

To conclude, although it seems reasonable to replace old buildings with modern structures, I strongly believe that it is crucial to preserve ancient work as it not only provides greater insight into history and cultural values but also attracts tourist.
