IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Some people believe that old buildings, such as town halls and art galleries, should be restored, even though this can be costly. Others argue that governments should replace them with new, modern buildings.

Discuss both views and give your own opinion.

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

Historical Buildings plays a vital role in the history of country and presents a lot of historical tales through them. It is believed that reservation of these historical buildings should be done despite of the expenses while on the other hand, there is an argument for replacing old ones with newly style buildings. Both the views will be discussed with facts in the upcoming paragraphs.

To begin with, old buildings should be reserved because of some reasons. The first and foremost is to preserve the history of country. To explain further, every old monument is related to some history. For instance Taj Mahal. It was built by Shah Jahan in the memory of his beloved wife Mumtaz Mahal. So, in case Government decides to replace that then the coming generations would never come to know that love was so pure during earlier times and also it will hurt sentiments of so many people who believe in love. Secondly, the knowledge will be effected in terms of education purposes. This means town halls and art galleries presents a lot about how the infrastructure, designs and paintings were quite popular in older times. Furthermore, with old buildings being replaced nobody will come to know about older times and knowledge will be effected.

On the flip side, new and modern style buildings are needed. Firstly, for development purposes. To explain further, every country wants to be developed and make their country a place where everything is according to the modern world. Consequently, new buildings will bring new infrastructure, new technology and new designs that are needed and quite common in this modern world. For example last year in New Delhi, one new 7D space experience theatre had been opened to experience the life of space. It was built by replacing one old town hall which was not in use since so many years and the Government want to bring something educative and fun. Secondly, preserving old buildings come with lots of expenditure. It is very hard to bring that same style of infrastructure again in this modern world because it is no where now. As a result reservation suffers.

In conclusion I would like to say although preserving old buildings comes with lots of expenses but I believe that preserving town halls and art galleries outweigh its diadvantages.
