IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Some people believe that old buildings, such as town halls and art galleries, should be restored, even though this can be costly. Others argue that governments should replace them with new, modern buildings.

Discuss both views and give your own opinion.

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

Old Buildings and town halls are usually seen as a significance of the history of the city. Some masses believe that therefore they should be preserved and restored timely even though being a hefty expense to the government. whereas the other half beliefs that they should be replaced with modern structures as the newer buildings are much more effcient then those from the older times. However i belive that the older structures that hold a historical value to the place should be restored but others without such importance can be repalced.

On one hand, masses belive that historic buildings such as the town halls and Art exhbition centeres play a vital role in dispalying the historic and cultural values of the place and hence should be preserved. For example there is a Old art gallery in ottawa that holds the exhibitions of artifacts that are over two hundered years old and are made by the locals of the town, therefore governement spends a good amount of money on its preservation every year.

on the other hand, the supporters of the latter view argue that modern structures are more convinient as they are planned according to needs of people. For example they include accesibility options for people with special needs and emergency exits that can be proven as a lifesaver in event of a tragedy.

In conclusion, although modern buildings can provide better convinience, safety and accesibility. Historic buildings play a vital role in presereving city's historic identity. Therefore i believe that the buildings with genuine historic values and significance should be restored and taken care of, whereas those who have little to no importance can be replaced with the modern architectures to meet the needs of people.
