Student answer (Band 6.0)

It is debatable topic to save our old heritage. A group of people believe that government should save these heritage sites such as town halls and art galleries. While, others argue that those buildings should replaced with the modern architecture. In the upcoming paragraphs, I will discuss both views along with my opinion.

The proponent argue that these historical sites have cultural background of a nation. Spending money on these sites is beneficial for the nation as well as it also preserve our cultural roots. For instance, Taj Mahal in India was built by Shah Jahan in year 1800 and a well known historical sites in the world, It attracts tourism from all over the world. So, every year government of India pass a special budget for the maintenance and restoration of the Taj Mahal.

However, opponents make some valid points. In some countries people are facing housing crises due to the increasing population, to fulfill the housing demands government have to come up with the modern ideas such as high rise building. In those sky-scrapers they can accommodate maximum no of peoples. In China, government is replacing old abundant building with modern skyscrapers to accommodate people.

In my perception, old building those are abundant from many years should be taken down and replaced with the modern architecture to accommodate the needs of the people.

In conclusion, historical building have there own significant value because they hold the cultural and historical values of the nation, however; those buildings which is not in use should be replace with modern building for people use.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses all parts of the task by discussing both views on whether to restore old buildings or replace them with modern ones, and the writer provides a clear personal opinion. The ideas are relevant and supported with examples, such as the mention of the Taj Mahal and skyscrapers in China. However, some arguments lack full extension and contain minor inaccuracies, such as stating that the Taj Mahal was built in 'year 1800' (it was built in the 17th century). The position is maintained throughout the essay, meeting the requirements for a Band 6.0.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay displays a coherent overall arrangement with a clear paragraph structure, including an introduction, body paragraphs addressing each view, a personal opinion, and a conclusion. Transitional phrases like 'The proponent argue', 'However', and 'In conclusion' are used to structure the text, although some cohesive devices are mechanical or faulty, such as 'It is debatable topic' and punctuation issues in the final paragraph. Referencing is generally clear, placing the response securely in the Band 6 category.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, attempting less common lexical items such as 'heritage sites', 'restoration', 'housing crises', and 'skyscrapers'. However, there are noticeable word choice and collocation errors, such as 'It is debatable topic to save our old heritage', 'abundant' instead of 'abandoned', and 'maximum no of peoples'. Spelling and word-form errors like 'building' instead of 'buildings' or 'have there own' are present, but they do not impede communication, aligning with Band 5.5 to 6.0 descriptors.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The writer attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, utilizing relative clauses and conditional structures. However, there are frequent grammatical errors, particularly with subject-verb agreement ('The proponent argue', 'those buildings which is not in use'), articles ('government of India pass', 'to fulfill the housing demands government'), and pluralization ('old building those are abundant'). While these errors do not severely impede understanding, they occur with enough frequency to restrict the score to a Band 5.5.
