IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Some people believe that old buildings, such as town halls and art galleries, should be restored, even though this can be costly. Others argue that governments should replace them with new, modern buildings.

Discuss both views and give your own opinion.

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

It has become a topic of debate that some people believe that historical buildings should be renovated even if the cost is higher, on the other hand, some individuals think that the authorities should invest in modern designed buildings at those locations. I am going to discuss both views in forthcoming paragraphs.

Firslty, the traditional houses and palaces represent the culture of the religion and the country. To explicate it, restoration of ancient buildings helps people to know about their ancestors and their lives. Along with it, it is considered as a good source of income through tourism, because when the individual from other countries find something unique, so it enhance the curiosity to know about the place. For instance, Golden Temple is famous worldwide because it is made up of pure gold and even the four doors which is symbol of respect for all religions enhance its uniqueness.

However, certain assemblage of people reckon that spending money on ancient structures is wastage of wealth. In other words, increased popullation in world has increased the demand for housing. Due to this, people are converting agriculture land into houses, which is not only impacting the quality of air but also the demand for organic food. If the government takes an action to use the ancient buildings for current housing demands, then the agriculture land can be prevented from getting destroyed.

In my opinion, old buildings should be refurbished according to the requirements of the period because these are not only providing knowledge about ancient culture but also becoming the major part of economy growth for the government.

As a result, even the historic buildings play an important role for any nation which makes the restoration considerable, however, the consequences of this can not be neglected.
