Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 3.0
The student has completely misinterpreted the prompt. The writing task instructions specifically asked to discuss the views on restoring old buildings versus replacing them with modern ones. However, the student wrote their entire essay about whether arts and music should be taught in schools compared to science and mathematics. Because the response is entirely off-topic regarding the actual prompt, it fails to address the core requirements of the task, resulting in a low score for Task Achievement despite the presence of general arguments.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0
The essay is divided into four paragraphs, including an introduction, two body paragraphs, and a conclusion, which shows an awareness of structural conventions. However, the logical progression is severely undermined by the complete irrelevance of the content to the prompt. Cohesive devices are used, such as 'To recapitulate' and 'On the other hand', but referencing and linking sometimes feel mechanical or repetitive ('boosts your skills and boosts the problem solving techniques'). Paragraphing is present, but the overall organizational structure fails to guide the reader through a coherent discussion of the actual task.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.0
The vocabulary used is relatively basic and repetitive, with noticeable inaccuracies in word choice and collocation. Examples include 'fruitfull', 'worthfull', 'massess', and 'life causing diseases'. The writer attempts some less common vocabulary such as 'sophisticated education system', 'recreational subjects', and 'bilingual', but these are often misused or awkwardly integrated into sentences. Spelling errors are present, though they generally do not prevent the reader from understanding the intended meaning.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 4.5
The response exhibits a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but grammatical accuracy is weak throughout. There are frequent errors in punctuation, capitalization (e.g., lowercase 'the' at the start of sentences, lowercase 'i'), subject-verb agreement ('the country economy will boosts and able'), and tense consistency. Run-on sentences and awkward phrasing are common, such as in the opening sentence: 'It is often believed by most of the individuals that, although learning arts and music as a subject is not fruitfull...'. These errors require the reader to slow down, though they rarely completely obscure meaning.
