IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Some people believe that old buildings, such as town halls and art galleries, should be restored, even though this can be costly. Others argue that governments should replace them with new, modern buildings.

Discuss both views and give your own opinion.

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 6.5)

In this day and age, certain individuals thinks that ancient architectures, like city halls or artistic museums, should be renovated despite the fact that the expense will be higher. However, others have a belief that those should be replaced by modern buildings by the state. From my perspective, it should be a balanced approach as both the points have valid argument.

On the one side, it is conspicuous that historic monuments have sentimental and traditional values. This is because it hold several memories of past of the particular place and people. In addition, it is cruicial to preserve the vintage buildings by restoring them to show the current and upcoming generations the beauty of old architecture, otherwise they will never get to witness it. For instance, in many parts of India, ancients forts and palaces are preserved so that public can witness and learn, as well as educational institutes can arrange visits for children to learn about their history in an effective way. This demonstrates that it is vital to few of the buildings should be renovated and kept with care as it has plenty of benefits.

On the contrary, some citizens argue that the authorites should spend money in establishing brand new buildings instead of reestablishing the old ones. This is a valid point as well because there are few old structures who require plenty of expenditure to restore them, which is not worth it as in that amount many new houses or offices can be created. As a result, many homeless people can get accomodated with the affordable prices and employment ratio can dramatically incline. For example, it is more practical that a brand new building such as shopping mall or a space for few offices is established instead of transforming a vintage museum in the same amount of money.

In conclusion, it is crystal clear that some old structures which are an important part of the history should be kept in a great condition for showing coming generations. However, certain buildings which requires hefty amount of money should not be restored and that funds should be used to create more modern architecture. In my opinion, this approach will be benefical to public in maximum ways.

The student demonstrates a sufficient range of vocabulary to allow some flexibility and precision, using terms such as 'historic monuments', 'sentimental and traditional values', and 'vintage museum'. There are, however, several lexical errors and awkward collocations, such as 'ancient architectures' instead of 'ancient architecture', 'authorites', 'accomodated', and 'employment ratio can dramatically incline'. Despite these occasional errors, the vocabulary is adequate for the task and communication is not impeded, fitting the Band 6 descriptors well.
