IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Some people believe that old buildings, such as town halls and art galleries, should be restored, even though this can be costly. Others argue that governments should replace them with new, modern buildings.

Discuss both views and give your own opinion.

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

Even though it will cost millions, few folks in the communities believe it is good to restore the historical monuments, while others believe that the authorities should change it with new buildings. In this essay, I will be representing both views and my personal opinion about the topic.

Firstly, the old art galleries or town halls must be restored even though it will take a lot of money to fix it. It should be done as the old artifacts has such a good history. People used to have good reasons behind any constructions. It is truly amazing how without having the internet , real guidance , modern instruments or technology, people used to build things with so much details in designs. For instance, in India, there are so many temples, forts which were built before any invention of gadgets. Their interior and exterior designs are the reason why there are so many foreigners visit India.

On the other hand, the growth of newly constructed buildings is increasing everyday. It is usually the modern-chic look of every skyscrapers or houses people prefer nowadays. Modern buildings are usually made with more comfort or people's beliefs in the high standards and not on the story behind the buildings.For example, it is observed in many of the mega cities, constuctors are usually more into the exterior look and getting more capital instead of thinking about making them more accessible to every person.

In conclusion, even though there should be new modern buildings as per growth in urbanization, in my opinion, we also should be restoring many of the historical buildings as much as we can, as it has our history of the people before us. Our future generation would be unaware of our history if we wiped it all.

Overall, the organizational structure is easy to follow, placing the essay comfortably within the Band 6.0 to 6.5 range.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The student demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, attempting some less common and topic-specific items such as 'historical monuments', 'artifacts', 'urbanization', and 'mega cities'. However, there are noticeable inaccuracies in word choice, collocation, and phrasing, such as 'few folks in the communities' instead of 'some people', 'change it with new buildings' instead of 'replace them', and 'capital' instead of 'profit'. Spelling and word-formation errors, such as 'constuctors', also occur. These errors do not impede communication, but they restrict the lexical score to a solid Band 6.0.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The response features a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, including conditional and concessive clauses such as 'Even though it will cost millions, few folks... believe it is good to restore...'.
