IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Some people believe that old buildings, such as town halls and art galleries, should be restored, even though this can be costly. Others argue that governments should replace them with new, modern buildings.

Discuss both views and give your own opinion.

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

It is argued by some people that new constructions should be made in order to replace the tradional buildings rather than to renovate them. This is to make the cities modern with the help of sky-scrapers and huge bridges.

The old buildings are symbol of our traditions and culture. These places represent our history like Badshahi mosque, Shalimar Bagh and Sheesh Mahal, Located in our historical city 'Lahore''. Many tourists visit them yearly and enjoy the reflection of past. These are significant reminder of our previous Mughal Empires. We should restore our culture because with the passage of time, their condition has become miserable. People only used to visit them without taking care of these particular places , constructed by our ancestors. There should be certain regulations approved by government to maintain their stability to enhance tourism. It could provide good economical productivity.

On the other hand, people want to destroy these historical constructions and replace them with new facilities which look attractive. As people consider the cost of renovation but not focus the construction cost that could be high. However, the high-risers, occupied with updated facilities are in demand throughout the world, this is not an accurate solution of getting rid to old town halls or galleries.

In my perspective, there should be a balance in the destruction of old ones and construction of new ones in terms of cost and tourism. If buildings are to restore, it would promote tourism and prosperity of our country. If buildings are to replace, it would be costly but convenient to get benefits of residential and commerial facilities. The important descion is in the hand of government either to invest in the culture or to take interest in towers.
