IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Some people believe that old buildings, such as town halls and art galleries, should be restored, even though this can be costly. Others argue that governments should replace them with new, modern buildings.

Discuss both views and give your own opinion.

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

Many people believes that the old buildings like town halls and art galleries should be restored, even though it could be costly. Whereas, other people believes that new and modern buildings should be build over the old buildings. I totally think that the new buildings should be build over the art galleries and town halls due to various reasons such as construction, time frame after the construction, sustainibility and so on.

Firstly, the town halls and art galleries are old in history wise as well as the infrastructure wise. The materials for the building used during the construction might be of low quality and might have been started to degrade. Due to this, the buildings might collapsed and create a major accident, killing a lot of people and damaging the surrounding area. For an instance, there is an art gallery built in early 90's with the cheap materials and with less knowledge of the construction, this building might collapse in the future accounting a lot fatalities and casualities, breaking the surrounding area down. If this same building was construted with modern technologies, it might stay like that for decades without any major accident.

Secondly, the new modern buildings are sturdy and has latest technologies in it. It could also stand after a natural disaster such a an earthquake. For an example, in Japan, nowadays most of the buildings are having some sort of spring mehcanism to counter the earthquakes as Japan faces a lot of earthquakes due to it's geographical placement.

Some people might think that the town halls and art galleries should be restored, because they might see some kind of values in them. As most of the art galleries contains beautiful paintings, historical artifacts and ornaments, ancient civilization's proof and many more. People like to visit places like this as it contains history of the old era. So, buildings like this should be restored, even though it becomes costly for the goverment for various reasons such as historical value, contains knowledge about ancient times which can be passed on to the future generations, to make it a nice tourist spot and so on.

In conclusion, I think it's best to have new and latest buildings to be built in place of the old art galleries and town halls because the new buildings are more sturdy, it's built using latest technology and construted using strong materials to prevent any incidents.
