Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5
The response attempts to discuss both views regarding the preservation versus replacement of old buildings and provides the writer's own opinion (leaning towards modern construction). However, there is a contradiction in the student's argument: in the introduction, the writer states that the latter statement (modern buildings) is more favourable, yet the first body paragraph argues that restoring historical structures saves money. Furthermore, some arguments are contradictory or poorly developed, such as claiming that restoration saves money while simultaneously stating that constructing a new library costs 135 million whereas renovation is half that amount (which still involves a substantial outlay). Ideas are somewhat repetitive and over-generalized. Therefore, the response fulfills the basic requirements of the prompt, but the development of ideas and positioning is inconsistent, placing it firmly at a Band 5.5.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0
The essay is divided into paragraphs, but the organization and progression are frequently disrupted by erratic fragments, orphan notes (e.g., 'Advantageous / Carpenters'), and poor transitional flow. Cohesive devices are used, but often inaccurately or mechanically, such as 'Furthermore', 'Hence', and 'Aftermath in this it a good idea'. Referencing is occasionally unclear, and the sentence structures within paragraphs sometimes lack logical progression. Paragraphing is attempted, but stray notes and disjointed sentence fragments within the body of the essay detract from overall readability. Cohesion is faulty and mechanical, aligning with the criteria for a Band 5.0.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.0
The student displays a limited and basic range of vocabulary with frequent inappropriate word choices and collocations. Examples include 'prop infrastructure', 'innovate job opportunities', 'etectra', and 'touching of the things'. There are also numerous awkward phrasings such as 'the in order to promote tourism, nations needs to should construct new infrastructures'. While the writer attempts some less common vocabulary like 'infrastructure', 'heritage', and 'expenditures', the inaccuracy in word formation and collocation impedes clear communication at times and restricts the lexical score to a Band 5.0.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0
Grammatical control is weak throughout the essay. The text contains a high frequency of errors in sentence structure, subject-verb agreement, and tense usage. Examples of faulty structures include 'Because to build mere modern built buildings is expensive, as compared', 'Since, these are the excellent method to attach youngster to our history', and 'As government is renovating every year that's why it is saved'. Complex sentence attempts are frequently marred by errors, and fragments or run-on structures are common. These persistent, frequent errors cause difficulty for the reader and reflect a Band 5.0 level of grammatical accuracy.
