Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0

The response attempts to discuss both views regarding the restoration versus replacement of old buildings, but the coverage is hampered by the length requirement not being met, as the essay is under the 250-word minimum at 244 words and trails off unfinished at the end. While the writer outlines the economic and cultural benefits of preservation alongside the modern facilities brought by new constructions, the development of ideas remains somewhat limited and repetitive. The position is discernible at the end of the introduction and conclusion, but the lack of completion and under-development of supporting points prevent the response from achieving a higher band score. Therefore, it fits best within the Band 5 descriptors, where the task is addressed only partially and ideas remain somewhat limited.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0

The essay is divided into four paragraphs, including an incomplete conclusion. There is a basic structural layout with introductory and body paragraphs using transition signals like 'On the one hand' and 'On the other hand'. However, logical progression is frequently disrupted by awkward referencing, repetitive sentence starters, and mechanical cohesive devices. For instance, sentences often begin abruptly with phrases like 'This is because, there kinds of building' or 'Owing to this', which obscure the precise logical relationship between ideas. Paragraphing is attempted, but the final paragraph breaks off mid-sentence. Overall, the organizational flaws and mechanical cohesion place this performance firmly at Band 5.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

The vocabulary used is adequate for basic communication, attempting less common items such as 'infrastructure', 'heritage', and 'amenities'. However, there are frequent errors in word choice, word formation, and collocation throughout the text. Examples include 'centain' instead of certain, 'perserve culutre backgroung' instead of preserve cultural background, 'bosst economy level' instead of boost the economy, and 'govenment' instead of government. Furthermore, spelling mistakes are noticeable ('easly', 'confortable', 'citizenss'). These lexical inaccuracies and repetitive phrasing restrict the score to Band 5, as the range is limited and noticeable errors cause some difficulty for the reader.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The essay demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, but control over grammar is weak. There are frequent errors in subject-verb agreement, articles, prepositions, and sentence structures, such as 'old building like town halls as well as art galleries should be restored, therefore this can be expensive' and 'governments should replace them with new, modern buildings' transitioning awkwardly into fragments. Many complex sentence attempts are faulty, leading to distorted meanings and strained readability. Punctuation and capitalization are also inconsistent. Because errors are frequent and occasionally impede smooth communication, the grammar matches the Band 5 descriptor level.
