IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Some people believe that old buildings, such as town halls and art galleries, should be restored, even though this can be costly. Others argue that governments should replace them with new, modern buildings.

Discuss both views and give your own opinion.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

Individuals have differing views regarding whether historical buildings and monuments should be preserved or should be developed as per the modern infrastructure. While some believe that it is crucial to preserve them in order to protect the cultural values, others argue that they should be replaced. This essay will discuss both the perspectives before explaining my own opinion.

To begin with the first stance, preservation of historical buildings like art galleries which contain various artefacts facilitate the cultural values and help the individuals to learn regarding the native culture and background despite the fact that a huge revenue is spent on maintenance of these buildings. However, children can learn about their historical values and beliefs by visiting these places. In order to restore and maintain these buildings, government can emphasize on initiating ticket price for visitors as these type of buildings attract a large number of tourists globally,

Conversely, due to advancement in technology, modern buildings are structured in a way to reflect the modern technology such as use of elevators in buildings can help elderly people to walk to the different floors easily. Furthermore, modern infrastructure attracts most of the youngsters as information regarding various places is available on internet easily via the content creators or social media influencers.

To conclude, despite the fact that modern buildings are safer than the historical buildings, it is my firm believe that historical monuments should be preserved in order to make the young generation aware regarding different cultures and values. Government can take various initiatives to get help in funding by organizing various donation camps or by charging the visitors a nominal fee.
