IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Some people believe that old buildings, such as town halls and art galleries, should be restored, even though this can be costly. Others argue that governments should replace them with new, modern buildings.

Discuss both views and give your own opinion.

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

While some individuals argue that heritage buiilding including town halls and art galleries regardless of their expensive rennovation should be restored, others believe that the autorities should substitue them with new, advance buildings. This essay will discuss both views while support the former due to higher income generation and attracting substantial tourist.

On one hand, the primary reason why some people advocate for modern building construction is due to contemporary facilities and beautification of the town. To look at this more clearly, modern infrastructures have many facilities including shopping centers, gaming zones, and modern appartments, reducing the housing problem in the busy town centers. Furthermore, skyscrapers also enhance the beauty of the city. Contemporary infrastructure of Dubai is the prime example of this, not only provides the state-of-the art facilities, also make the city look stunning.

On the other hand, people who support the resotration of heritage building believe that it would attract tourist and help in economic development despite being expensive. Indviduals interesting in history always spend subtle amount of money to view such places. Therefore, If these type of places are preserved, helping the government to generate suble amount of income. Edinburgh is the prime example of this as people around the world come to see the old cathedral buildings, art galleries and town halls, hence boosting economy.

In conclusion, despite being the advantages of modern infrastructure, I strongly support the preservation of the heritage and culture, attracting the tourists around the world and helping the government to generate substantial income.
