IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Some people believe that old buildings, such as town halls and art galleries, should be restored, even though this can be costly. Others argue that governments should replace them with new, modern buildings.

Discuss both views and give your own opinion.

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

There is ongoing debate whether historical buldings like town halls, art galleries should be restored despite it's heavy restoration cost, while other people argue that authorities should replace them with new infrustructure. I will discuss both the perspectives and provide my opinion .

To begin with, the building like town halls and art galleries should be maintained as this can helpful in many ways to government and local people. Firstly, you can organise huge events in the town halls for local community. As it holds historical hertiage of place and community. Moreover, it can be source of income by renting the town hall for community or personal events. Secondly, the art gallery is a vital element to know more about the history of place and the living community. People can visit it and gain more knowledge about the place. This can be also seen as income source as the government can charge a small amount entrance fees for visitors.

Furthermore, these types of building can not be replace. However, these building were building in older time and do not have modern facilities for people. For instance, in past facilities like elevator, easy access ,wide doorways and internet access were not seen in the old buildings. Owing to this, the government can add this type of facilities and can make this build very useful for local community and government too.

To put in nutshell, it appears to me that these infrastructures hold huge historical heritage of place and community and can be seen as source of income by government. Even though these buildings are old, the government should not replace them with the modern buildings, nevertheless, they can renovate it according current needs of people.
