Student answer (Band 6.0)

Town halls and art galleries plays a crucial role in our society. Some people believe that old buildings should be renovated, others argue that authorities should turn them down to modern one. Although these building are old, I think that they make a major difference in our community.

On the one hand, historical buildings has numerous advantages. It not only brings tourism which contributes a large amount to our economy, but also aware people about the history. The small articles displayed in the galleries gives us a sense of acknowledgement, what our countries have been through in the past. The restoration of such building is expensive, but the importance of these buildings is still not replaceable. Moreover, the investment can be easily covered by the tourists. For example, Delhi has wide spread its area to Noida and Gurgraham for corporate offices while the historical buildings are still at the same place.

On the other hand, these old ones when replaced with modern architecture can be served a new place for work culture, accomadation or as a community centre. As the population is increasing at a rapid speed, it is crucial to widespread the areas with new buildings so that the whole population doesnot live at a single place which can result in overpopulation in an area leading to health realted issues or traffic conjection.

Altough these new establishment can also effect the society in a positive way, but it still cannot replace the importance of the old ones. In addtion to this, I believe that these modern buildings can be structured anywhere in the city. Furthermore, the modern building will also require some investment ,firstly to diminesh the old one and then to turn it down to a whole new building where as the old one will require to be renovated only.

In conclusion, the old buildings are as important as the new ones and both require some type of investment at the first place, but it is not mandatory that this old ones should be repalced with the modern ones.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

The response addresses all parts of the prompt by discussing both the restoration of old buildings and their replacement with modern architecture, while also stating a clear personal opinion. The main ideas are generally relevant, such as economic benefits through tourism versus the need for more space due to population growth. However, some ideas remain slightly under-developed or vague, such as the mention of health-related issues or traffic congestion, which lack deeper explanation. The position is maintained consistently throughout the essay, and examples like the reference to Delhi help to support the arguments. To reach a higher band, the student should expand further on the reasoning behind each viewpoint rather than relying on brief explanations, ensuring all arguments are fully explored.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The essay is divided into logical paragraphs with a clear introduction, body paragraphs addressing each side of the argument, and a conclusion. Cohesive devices are employed to guide the reader through the text, such as 'On the one hand', 'On the other hand', and 'In conclusion'. However, referencing and progression are sometimes faulty or mechanical. For example, phrases like 'these old ones when replaced with modern architecture can be served a new place' demonstrate awkward transitions and unclear referencing. Paragraphing is used sufficiently to structure the overall argument, but intra-paragraph cohesion occasionally falters due to grammatical errors in linking clauses and pronouns.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

The student displays an adequate vocabulary range for the task, attempting some less common lexical items such as 'restoration', 'architecture', and 'overpopulation'. However, there are noticeable word choice and collocation errors that detract from precision. Examples include writing 'turn them down to modern one' instead of tearing them down, 'aware people about' instead of raising awareness, and spelling errors like 'accomadation', 'doesnot', 'realted', 'conjection', 'Altough', 'diminesh', and 'repalced'. While these errors do not severely impede overall communication, they prevent the lexical score from reaching a higher tier.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

The writing contains a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating an attempt at varied structures like conditional and concessive clauses. However, there are frequent grammatical errors throughout the text. Subject-verb agreement issues are common, such as 'Town halls and art galleries plays' and 'historical buildings has', as well as article errors ('the old ones', 'a new place'). Passive voice constructions and verb forms are also mishandled in places, such as 'can be served a new place' and 'will require to be renovated only'. Although these errors do not completely obscure the meaning, their frequency limits the grammar score to a band 5.5.
