Student answer (Band 6.0)
One thought of society assert that traditional buildings such as museums, town halls, need to be renovated, whether it costs more, while others claim that legal authorities can construct new, modern buildings in place of previous ones. I strongly agree with the formal view, however, I will discuss both the viewpoints along with my opinion in the subsequent paragraphs.
On the one hand, proponents of replacing ancient buildings with modern ones think that it is crucial to stay up-to-date with this contemporary world's needs. In other words, new buildings are constructed in the way that is the requirement of today, such as heat resistant ones and air-conditioning is also available, and even in the limited land availability, concerning the need of the growing population. For example, In canada, 20-30- floor buildings are becoming popular and the earlier ones are depleting as the population is increasing enormously. Therefore, the problem of house shortage will not occur and people can be satisfied. Despite this, I still believe that old ones need to be there to present the culture and history.
On the other hand, supporters of restoring old monuments believe that it leads to the allure of tourism. To describe this, when these buildings are present there, more visitors can come to watch these old places, and it also attract them to know more about the culture and history of that specific place. For instance, Taj Mahal in Delhi is one of the renowned visiting site which catch the attention of thousand of visitors because it was built in the loving memory of Mumtaj and Shahjahan, and also it has constructed with the white pure marble. Hence, it boost the overall economy of the country, and also people can learn about their history and get tied to their roots by having a great visits in these places.
To recapitulate, although the modern buildings are required for further growth of the country, ancient monuments are benefial to educate individuals about history and old culture so that they can stay connect to their roots.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
The student addresses all parts of the prompt by discussing both views on whether old buildings should be restored or replaced with modern ones, and clearly states an opinion in the introduction ("I strongly agree with the formal view"). Ideas are extended and supported with relevant examples, such as mentioning high-rise developments in Canada to support modern housing needs, and referencing the Taj Mahal for tourism and cultural preservation. However, there is a slight misuse of terminology in the introduction where the student writes "formal view" instead of "former view", which minorly impacts precision. Nevertheless, the main arguments are well-developed and the position remains clear throughout the essay, fulfilling the requirements for Band 6.5 to 7.0. Given the consistent development of both perspectives, a band score of 6.5 is appropriate.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The essay displays a clear overall progression and logical organisation. Paragraphing is used appropriately, with a clear introduction, separate body paragraphs for each view, and a conclusion. Cohesive devices are employed to connect ideas, such as "On the one hand", "On the other hand", and "To recapitulate". However, some referencing is slightly faulty or mechanical, and certain transitions feel abrupt. For example, the sentence "Despite this, I still believe that old ones need to be there to present the culture and history" functions adequately as a transition, but overall referencing could be smoother. The use of cohesive devices is sometimes repetitive, placing this response firmly in the Band 6 category.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
The student demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully attempting less common items such as "contemporary world's needs", "depleting", and "renowned visiting site". However, there are noticeable lexical inaccuracies and awkward word choices throughout the text. For instance, "One thought of society assert" contains an unnatural phrasing of the subject, "formal view" is used instead of former, and "Taj Mahal in Delhi" contains a geographical inaccuracy since it is located in Agra. Additionally, there are minor collocation issues like "get tied to their roots" instead of "stay connected to their roots". These errors do not impede overall communication, reflecting the characteristics of Band 6.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
The response contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, demonstrating an attempt to use subordination and relative clauses (e.g., "...even though this can be costly" from the prompt, and student constructs like "...which catch the attention of thousand of visitors because it was built..."). However, there are frequent grammatical errors, particularly with subject-verb agreement ("One thought... assert", "thousand of visitors"), prepositions ("in place of previous ones", "constructed with the white pure marble"), and tense consistency. Punctuation is generally acceptable, but structural inaccuracies persist, meaning the criteria for Band 6 are fully met where errors rarely impede overall comprehension.
