Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0
The response addresses the prompt by discussing both views and providing a personal opinion, but it only partially fulfills the task requirements because some ideas remain limited and under-developed. For instance, the discussion of safety concerns regarding old buildings is introduced without sufficient extension or supporting examples. Furthermore, it is important to note that the response contains 244 words, which fails to meet the minimum length requirement of 250 words. To achieve a higher band, the writer needs to expand fully on all parts of the task with well-supported arguments and ensure the word count requirement is satisfied.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The text presents a coherent overall arrangement with a recognisable introduction, body paragraphs addressing each view, and a conclusion. Paragraphing is used to separate ideas, and some basic cohesive devices such as 'On the one hand' and 'In conclusion' are employed to guide the reader. However, cohesion is occasionally mechanical and referencing is not always clear, as seen in dense run-on sentences lacking appropriate punctuation. Progression is sometimes hindered by abrupt transitions between points. To progress further, the writer should use a wider variety of cohesive ties more flexibly and ensure logical links between sentences are smoother.
Lexical Resource: Band 4.5
The vocabulary used is minimally adequate for the task, but the range is limited. The writer attempts some less common vocabulary, such as 'restoration' and 'proponents', but encounters noticeable errors in word choice and word formation, such as writing 'art calorie' instead of 'art gallery', 'townhouse' instead of 'town hall', and 'prospective' instead of 'perspectives'. Additionally, there are spelling and collocation inaccuracies throughout the text that cause some difficulty for the reader. To improve in this area, the student must focus on precise word choice, accurate word forms, and correct spelling of common academic terms.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The writer demonstrates a limited range of structures, relying on a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, though attempts at complex sentences are frequently faulty. There are frequent errors in grammar, such as missing articles ('should spend on restoration of old building'), incorrect verb forms ('proponents of this view argued'), and faulty subject-verb agreement. Punctuation is also weak, with multiple sentences running together without proper terminal punctuation. While the general meaning can usually be deciphered, these frequent errors cause difficulty for the reader. Greater control over basic grammatical structures and sentence boundaries is needed to reach a higher level.
