Student answer (Band 6.0)
Some people argue that historic buildings including halls and art galleries should be renovated and preserved, even though it could be expensive, while others believe that government should demolished the old buildings and replace them with modern architecture. This essay will discuss both views and argue that although restoring historic buildings can be expensive , preserving them is important because of their historic and cultural values.
There are several reasons why people believe that old builidng should be restored rather than replaced. First and foremost reason is that , old building represents cultural and historical values. Ancient buildings reflect history, art designs, ancient object and sculpture tells more about past events. For examples, art galleries and museums have collections of historic things, one can learn alot about history through them. Moreover, old building are the identity of cities and attract tourism. To preserve old buildings and to manage the tourists, they need lots of labour and professionals. In results, it creates tons of jobs and helps in economy. Thus, it is very important to save old building to boost economy and to perseve the past knowledge that one can pass to next generation.
On the other side, many people wants to demolish the old building as to preserve them can be very expensive. They believe saving the old architecture is the waste of money and space. As the population is growing, human need more space for living. Modern buildings are much advance, they consume small area and large number of people can live with quality of life.
In conclusion, restoring and replacing the historic buildings have their own advantages. I believe, the old buildings that can be preserve and maintain should be restored for future generation so that they can reflect to the past. The buildings which are beyond repair and unsafe to live should be demolished and converted to some modern architecture.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
The response addresses all parts of the task and presents a clear position throughout, balancing the benefits of preservation with the necessity of modernization. The main ideas are relevant, meeting the requirements of presenting both views and giving a personal opinion. For instance, the first body paragraph successfully outlines the cultural value of historic buildings and their economic impact through tourism, while the opposing paragraph acknowledges space constraints and financial burdens. However, some ideas remain slightly under-developed; for example, the point regarding economic benefits is stated broadly without deeper elaboration. To reach a higher level, the writer should extend and support all main arguments with more thorough explanations and specific examples rather than generalizing.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The essay demonstrates a coherent overall arrangement with a clear logical progression throughout. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the introduction, the two differing viewpoints, and the conclusion. The writer employs cohesive devices to connect ideas, such as "First and foremost reason is that" and "On the other side". However, cohesion is occasionally mechanical or faulty, seen in repetitive transitional phrasing and minor mechanical lapses like referencing. Pronoun referencing and substitution could be managed more flexibly. To achieve a higher standard, the flow between sentences should rely less on formulaic linkers and incorporate smoother, more natural semantic transitions, ensuring all cohesive ties are completely accurate.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
The writer uses an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully attempting less common items related to the topic, such as "renovated and preserved", "modern architecture", and "identity of cities". However, there are noticeable lexical errors in word form, spelling, and word choice that reflect a limited and developing range. Examples include writing "builidng" instead of buildings, "government should demolished" instead of demolish, and "human need more space" instead of humans. Furthermore, phrasing such as "historic things" lacks precision. These inaccuracies do not severely impede communication, but they restrict the score. To improve, the student needs to pay closer attention to word forms, spelling accuracy, and collocation appropriateness.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
The essay displays a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating attempts at subordination and relative clauses, such as in "Some people argue that historic buildings... while others believe that..." There are, however, several errors in grammar and punctuation throughout the text. Noticeable issues involve subject-verb agreement and article usage, such as "old building are the identity" instead of buildings are, and missing articles in "in results, it creates tons of jobs". Punctuation errors also appear, including unnecessary spaces before commas like "expensive , preserving". Although these errors are present, they rarely impede overall communication. To move up, the writer needs to produce a greater frequency of error-free complex sentences and ensure tighter control over plurals and articles.
