Student answer (Band 5.5)

It is often argued that aged buildings, like town halls and art galleries should be preserved which can be expensive, while others believe the opposite and demand for the replacement in the form of modern buildings. I believe that old buildings should be restored for the following reasons.

On the hand, it is believed that ancient buildings like town halls and art galleries should be renovated because it is a good way to show future generations about the idea of how their ancestors were living and how did the modernasiation occured. For instance, Rock art gallery in New City , where every art is being made with the help of rocks and it shows diverse cultures and handmade efforts without using any electric tool.

Although, it will be very costly to renovate these galleries. As, they require extra care because they are getting old and everything even a small material used in it has a life. Hence, for our coming generations, it is a good way to teach them about the ancient art.

On the other hand, replacement is being asked with ne buildngs. Some people believe that in our this modern era, no one visits these galleries as everything is avaialbe online. For example, there is a website known as everyart.com which provides customisation art where they can build any art using canavas tool. Moreover, they build it and send it directly to your house. Furthermore, websites like Amazon provide every basic item from clothes to hardware and kitchen products. Hence, there is no need to go to town halls to buy anything. Therefore, government should replace the old buildings with the new ones and more of the IT sector can be given that space which will give more employement to young youth.

In conclusion, although bothe views have merits and demerits, I believe, ancient ones should be restored because there should be something from our ancestors as a gift and we can applaud there hardwork they did to bring us here.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

The response addresses the prompt by discussing both views on old buildings and providing a personal opinion. However, the development of ideas remains limited and under-developed. For instance, the discussion regarding why government should replace old buildings mentions online websites and buying items from Amazon, which wanders off-topic as it misinterprets the function of public spaces like town halls and art galleries. The student presents a clear position throughout the text, but the supporting arguments lack depth and rely on over-generalised or slightly irrelevant examples, placing this response firmly in the middle tier of task achievement where some parts of the task are addressed more fully than others.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The essay displays some overall organization with clear paragraph breaks and basic signposting such as 'On the hand' and 'In conclusion'. However, the progression is sometimes hampered by mechanical and repetitive cohesive devices. Referencing can be unclear, and logical links between sentences occasionally falter, as seen in the abrupt transition within the third paragraph starting with 'Although, it will be very costly'. To move to a higher level, the writer needs to ensure that cohesive devices are used more naturally and that the logical flow between supporting points is smoother and more transparent throughout the entire essay.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

The vocabulary used is limited and minimally adequate for the task, featuring noticeable errors in word choice, spelling, and word formation that occasionally cause some difficulty for the reader. Examples of lexical slips include 'modernasiation' for modernisation, 'ne buildngs' for new buildings, 'avaialbe' for available, 'canavas' for canvas, and 'bothe' for both. The writer attempts some less common vocabulary such as 'customisation art' and 'renovated', but inaccuracies in collocation and word form prevent the response from achieving a higher band. Improving spelling accuracy and precision in word selection will be essential for lexical growth.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The text demonstrates a limited range of structures, relying on a mix of simple and somewhat faulty complex sentences. There are frequent errors in grammar and punctuation, such as missing articles, incorrect prepositions, and tense inconsistencies in clauses like 'how did the modernasiation occured'. Punctuation is also erratic in places, particularly with unnecessary comma placements before dependent clauses. While communication is generally maintained despite these errors, the high frequency of grammatical slips across basic and complex forms prevents the writing from reaching a level with more sustained error-free sentence structures.
