Student answer (Band 4.5)

A their is an old saying old is gold, so old building such as town hall and art galleries both are very important institutions and many people have been benefitted from them. But many people have different mind and mentality they believe that new building would gave a better look and attract people eighter they are local or from other cities.

my personal point of view is that government should not replace them but yes rather take care good care of them and many people have attached sentiments with these old buildings so for their sake the government should keep it as they are so that they can visit them when ever they want.

as for the modern building government should also make them in other areas.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.0

Your opinion is identifiable: you argue that historic buildings should be kept and that modern buildings can be built elsewhere. However, the task asks you to discuss both views, and the case for replacing old buildings is only briefly mentioned in the claim that new ones may “give a better look and attract people.” You do not explain the costs or practical benefits of replacement, nor develop why restoration matters beyond people’s attachment to these places. The response therefore addresses the task only minimally, with ideas that remain under-developed. It is also substantially below the required 250 words, leaving too little space to explain both sides and support your position. Develop each view with reasons and a relevant example, then state your opinion clearly.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.5

There is a basic sequence: you introduce the issue, state your opinion, and add that modern buildings could be built elsewhere. This gives the reader a general sense of your position. However, the response is presented as one continuous block, so the two sides and your conclusion are not clearly separated. Connections between ideas are also limited; “But” and “as for” do some linking, but the relationship between the claims is not always clear, and the final point feels abrupt. Organise the essay into an introduction, separate paragraphs for each view, and a conclusion. Use linking phrases to show contrast and cause, and make sure each paragraph develops one main idea.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

You use some relevant vocabulary for the topic, including “old buildings,” “institutions,” “modern building,” and “sentiments.” These choices make the general subject understandable. However, the range is limited and several phrases are inaccurate or awkward, such as “old is gold,” “different mind and mentality,” and “take care good care of them.” Spelling errors such as “eighter” and “when ever” also reduce accuracy. Aim for more precise expressions, for example, “historic buildings,” “preserve their cultural value,” and “attract visitors.” Avoid repeating general words such as “building” and “people”; use topic-specific alternatives where appropriate. More accurate collocations would make your ideas clearer and more convincing.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.5

You attempt to connect ideas in longer sentences, for example, “many people have different mind and mentality they believe that new building would gave a better look.” However, sentence boundaries are often unclear, and the response relies on a narrow range of structures. There are frequent errors in verb forms and agreement, including “would gave,” “many people have been benefitted,” and “government should…take care.” Articles and plurals are also inconsistent, as in “new building” and “old building.” Capitalisation and punctuation need attention, particularly at the start of sentences and around joined clauses. Practise writing shorter, complete sentences first, then combine ideas using accurate conjunctions and varied structures.
