Student answer (Band 6.0)

It is widely argued across the globe about restoring the old buildings like town halls and art galleries, even though it can be costly. Some people believe that it is acceptable to spend funds on restoration, while others argue that government should replace them with new, and modern buildings. I believe, restoration of an old buildings and repurpose them for current needs should be done.

Those who advocate restoring old buildings belives that by preserving them, they are protecting their nation's history and culture. Government should allocate funds to restoration department to preserve the heritage of the country. These old buildings can be positioned as a tourist attraction spot and introduce an entry ticket. This way, these preserved old buildings can generate revenue and protect the sentiments of the people attached with these architecture. For an example, five years ago the Indian government spent one million dollar and restored the Taj mahal located in Agra (India). After the restoration, the footfall percentage surged by three hundred fifty percent and sale from entry tickets were increased significantly.

On the other hand, those who are in favour of new and modern buildings state their reason that preserving old buildings are not helping the nation to grow economically. Building global capability centres, Special economic zones will attract international companies to come to the country and establish their offices. Additionally, foreign institutional investors and forein portfolio investors will also start investing in the growth of the nation. For an example, In mumbai two hundred plus multinational companies had opened their GCCs in past five years, which resulted in GDP growth from 2.5 trillion dollars to 3.2 trillion dollars.

In my opinion, government should preserve the heritage and the culture of the country. Along with this, leverage these old buildings and turn them into special economic zones to attract multinational companies to expand their businesses in the nation.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

You address both sides of the discussion and state a clear preference for preserving old buildings, while also proposing that they be adapted for modern use. The heritage and tourism argument is relevant, and the Taj Mahal example gives it some support. The case for replacement is also explained through investment and employment, but it focuses mainly on economic growth and does not clearly explain why new buildings are preferable to restoring existing ones. Your final suggestion to turn heritage buildings into special economic zones is an interesting attempt to reconcile the views, but its practicality and connection to preservation need further explanation. Develop each argument more evenly and make the distinction between replacing and repurposing buildings clearer.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction, separate paragraphs for the two views, and a concluding opinion. Phrases such as “On the other hand” and “In my opinion” help signal the direction of the discussion, and the examples are placed alongside the relevant arguments. However, some connections between ideas are abrupt. For instance, the move from modern buildings to foreign investment and GDP growth does not explain the link between new construction and those outcomes. The conclusion also introduces the idea of converting old buildings into special economic zones without preparing it in the body. Use clearer links to show how each example supports its claim, and ensure the final proposal follows logically from the discussion.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use a suitable range of topic vocabulary, including “preserving,” “heritage,” “tourist attraction,” “multinational companies,” and “foreign institutional investors.” These choices show an attempt to discuss both cultural and economic considerations. However, some less common expressions are inaccurate or unnatural, such as “protect the sentiments of the people attached with these architecture” and “footfall percentage surged.” There are also spelling errors, including “belives” and “forein,” and some phrases are imprecise, such as “restoration department.” These do not prevent the reader from understanding the main points, but they limit precision and naturalness. Aim for accurate collocations and check spelling, especially in specialised terms.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt a mix of simple and complex sentences, including clauses beginning “even though,” “while,” and “which resulted in.” This gives the response some structural variety, and the main ideas remain understandable. However, errors in agreement, articles, and verb forms occur in several places. For example, “an old buildings” should be “old buildings” or “an old building,” and “those who … belives” needs subject–verb agreement. In “preserving old buildings are not helping,” the gerund phrase should take a singular verb. Some sentence patterns are also incomplete or awkward, particularly “Along with this, leverage these old buildings.” Review agreement and article use, and make sure each sentence has a complete, grammatically controlled main clause.
