Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

In the modern era some people believe that historic buildings should be preserved by the state, while other argue restoring old buildings is an expensive process and it would be more practical to demolish them and make space for the more futuristic buildings. In my view, government should allocate their budget to maintain older structures in order to pass those creations to the next generation.

One major reason why we should restore and preserve older infrastructure is each of those buildings contain valuable information about older architectural practices. Demolishing those iconic buildings would destroy the significant part of the cities history. by allocating government funding to restore those structures would benefit for the future generation to learn about the architectural history of the city that they live in. For example, in most of British colonies you can see the colonial influence on most of the older buildings and this is a clear reflect on how different invaders altered the city structure and design. It is important to preserve those part of the history for the younger generation to understand the different milestones that the city has to survive through.

Although, historical buildings are important part of the history, those structures are extremely expensive to maintain. Most older buildings are equipped with more complicated and out dated technology for general heating and lighting. Maintaining those out dated systems require specific tools and talent, which is rare and costly to find in the modern era. Because of this hurdles, people argue that it is more practical to replace those older buildings with more efficient and sustainable designs. Consequently, it will save more funding to more necessary expenditures such as health and education. However, I believe, the historic value of those older structures are far more valuable than the cost that we have invest to protect them.

In conclusion, nowadays, people are arguing whether is it worth to preserve older building or is it

more appropriate to replace them. Although, there are merits to both sides of the argument, In my perspective older building are worth saving for the future generations.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

You address both views and state a consistent opinion: the introduction supports preserving older buildings, and the conclusion repeats that they are worth saving. The historical and architectural value is explained with relevant support, particularly the example of colonial influence on British-colony buildings. You also present the opposing case that outdated heating and lighting systems make restoration costly, and connect replacement to funding for health and education. This fully covers the task and shows some development beyond a basic discussion. To strengthen the response further, develop the practical case with a specific example or explain more precisely how governments could balance preservation costs against other needs; some points, especially the final claim about relative value, remain asserted rather than fully supported.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction, separate paragraphs for the two views, and a conclusion. The progression from historical value to maintenance costs is easy to follow, and signposts such as “Although” and “Consequently” help show relationships between ideas. However, some linking is mechanical or awkward: “Although” begins a sentence without a clear main clause, and “Because of this hurdles” does not connect smoothly to the preceding explanation. The conclusion also repeats the question’s framing rather than synthesising the discussion. Use clearer references to connect each example to its main point, and vary transitions so the argument flows naturally rather than relying on formulaic markers.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of topic vocabulary, including “architectural practices,” “colonial influence,” “sustainable designs,” and “historic value.” These choices help communicate the main ideas, and attempts at more specific language are evident. Some word choices and collocations are inaccurate or imprecise, however: “older infrastructure” is not the most natural description of buildings, “a clear reflect” is incorrectly formed, and “the city has to survive through” does not express the intended historical experience naturally. There are also spelling and form issues such as “out dated” and “futuristic” where “modern” may be more suitable. Aim for precise collocations and check word forms and spelling when editing.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt a mix of simple and complex structures, including a contrast clause beginning “Although” and a cause-and-effect sentence with “Because of this.” Meaning is generally clear, but some grammatical errors recur and occasionally make sentences awkward. For example, “other argue” needs subject–verb agreement, while “each of those buildings contain” also requires a singular verb. The sentence beginning “by allocating government funding” is a fragment, and “Although, historical buildings are important…” lacks a complete main clause. Articles, plurals, and punctuation also need attention, as in “the cities history” and the inconsistent capitalisation after full stops. Practise checking each sentence for a complete clause and agreement between subjects and verbs.
