IELTS Writing Task 2 question
Some people believe that old buildings, such as town halls and art galleries, should be restored, even though this can be costly. Others argue that governments should replace them with new, modern buildings.
Discuss both views and give your own opinion.
Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
During this recent era of urbanization some believe that restoration of vintage buildings and art galleries is the need of time while others argue that it is not cost effiecient.
These art galleries and town halls are an open treasure chest for people who love their heritage and want to stay grounded to their roots. Converting these crusty old buildings into their former glory will keep history intact. For example some of these museums have books more than centuries old, some have fossils of dinosaurs datingback to the statrt of times and both these would be too fragile to be ill handled. Special unit of people would be needed to move these delicate items and even shipping them to another destination would add more to the cost.
On the other hand people who disagree with this notion give a reasonable argument as well. If government is going to use funds they should spend them on giving a more modern experience to these classics. Since majority of these buildings are from ancient times with some eroding away at the bases and having cracked ceilings slight use of force could make them come crashing down. This is a major risk for public safety. Modern buildings go through certain parameters for combatting natural disasters which these old ones lack.
In my opinion resources need to be mindfully used and a cost effieceint method should be applied. New buildings can be made at the fraction of the cost for restoration and also include some modern technology. Interactive learning can be introduced where walking past a certain monument or gallery could narrate the incidents relating to it.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
You discuss both positions and give a clear personal view: you explain the heritage value of restoration, then present safety and modernisation as reasons to replace old buildings, before favouring new construction. The examples of fragile historical objects and buildings with cracked ceilings help make the arguments relevant. However, some points are more fully explained than others. The restoration case focuses heavily on moving museum objects, rather than explaining why the buildings themselves should be preserved, while the final proposal for interactive technology is introduced briefly and not linked clearly to the cost comparison. Develop these points with a specific example and explain more directly how your preferred approach balances heritage, safety and public spending.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The response has a coherent overall structure: an introduction, a paragraph for each view, and a concluding paragraph stating your opinion. Signposting such as “On the other hand” makes the shift between positions easy to follow, and examples generally appear alongside the ideas they support. Some connections are less clear or feel mechanical. For instance, “both these would be too fragile” refers to books and fossils, but the reference is slightly awkward, and the final paragraph moves quickly from cost to interactive learning without showing the link between them. Use clearer references and add transitions that explain how each point supports your argument. A more explicit concluding sentence would also help bring the discussion together.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You attempt a range of topic-related vocabulary, including “heritage,” “former glory,” “fragile,” “eroding,” and “natural disasters.” These choices help communicate the main ideas, and the meaning is generally understandable. However, several expressions are inaccurate or too informal for this essay, such as “crusty old buildings,” “open treasure chest,” and “cost effiecient.” There are also spelling errors, including “datingback,” “statrt,” and “effieceint,” and some collocations are unnatural, for example “use of force” when describing a building’s collapse. Aim for precise, formal phrasing and check spelling carefully. More accurate use of topic vocabulary would make the argument clearer and more convincing.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, including a conditional structure in “If government is going to use funds…” and a relative clause in “buildings…with some eroding away at the bases.” Most sentences communicate the intended meaning, and errors rarely prevent understanding. Some grammatical problems remain, however. The opening sentence lacks a clear article before “recent era,” and “some believe that restoration…is the need of time” has an awkward grammatical construction. In “Since majority of these buildings,” an article is needed, while “a cost efficient method should be applied” would benefit from a clearer sentence structure. Review articles, sentence boundaries and clause construction, and proofread punctuation to improve control while retaining your complex sentences.
