Student answer (Band 5.0)

In this modern era, people run after innovations and brand new technologies. Restoring the old buildings rather than replacing them with new modern buildings erase the historic information of the city. I wholeheartedly believe that buildings that preserve the memories of the city should be restored no matter the cost.

Due to busy schedule and lots of priorities most of the parents has no time to educate their children about the importance of the city. If these buildings exist, teachers can take the students for a field trip to gallaries and museum and educate them about the history of the city. In this way younger generation give priority to their city. For instance, one of the war memorial hall have replaced with a library 15 years ago. I know it was in rememberence of World War II. My 10 year old son only know it as a library.

Even though restoring in a hectic procedure and cost a lot of money, this can attract plethora of tourists to the city. Artists from all around the world will come to see the art works submitted in the galleries. This can improve the tourist facilities in the city and thereby increase the income for the city. Recent survey by Income Tax Department noted that, several cities are restoring the old buildings from the profit they made from tourism.

To conclude, restoring old building helps to gain knowledge in younger generations and this can retain the value of the city.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.0

Your position is clear: you strongly support restoring historic buildings, and you give relevant reasons about educating younger people and attracting tourists. The examples of the memorial hall becoming a library and tourism income help make these points concrete. However, the task asks you to discuss both views, and the argument for replacing old buildings with modern ones is not explained; the opening only mentions innovation. Some support is also unclear, such as the claim that teachers can take students to galleries and museums, which does not fully show why the buildings themselves must be preserved. The response is also three words below the required minimum. Develop the modern-building case fairly, then explain why your view is stronger, with fuller support for each point.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0

The response has a recognisable structure: an introduction states your opinion, two body paragraphs give reasons, and a conclusion restates your position. Paragraphs generally focus on one main idea, and linking expressions such as “For instance,” “Even though,” and “To conclude” help signal relationships. However, the overall progression is limited because the opposing view is absent, so the discussion does not move through both sides before reaching a judgement. Some links are also mechanical or unclear: “In this way younger generation give priority to their city” does not clearly follow from the field-trip example, and “This can improve the tourist facilities” has an uncertain reference. Add a paragraph on the case for modern buildings and use clearer links between each claim and its consequence.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of vocabulary for the topic, including “historic information,” “field trip,” “war memorial,” “tourist facilities,” and “income.” These choices make the main ideas understandable, and you attempt less common expressions such as “plethora of tourists.” Some word choices and collocations are inaccurate or awkward, however: “run after innovations,” “submitted in the galleries,” and “hectic procedure” do not express the intended meanings naturally. There are also spelling errors in “gallaries” and “rememberence.” Aim for precise, natural combinations and check spelling carefully. For example, use “pursue innovation,” “artworks displayed in galleries,” and “a lengthy and costly process.”

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt both simple and more complex sentence forms, including a conditional sentence (“If these buildings exist, teachers can take the students…”) and a concession clause beginning “Even though.” Meaning is generally recoverable, but some grammatical errors remain. For example, “most of the parents has” has subject–verb disagreement, while “younger generation give” needs an article and a matching verb. In “one of the war memorial hall have replaced,” the noun phrase and verb form are not correctly constructed; “My 10 year old son only know it” also has agreement and tense problems. Review agreement, articles, and past passive forms, and proofread sentence boundaries and punctuation. More accurate control of these patterns would make your ideas easier to follow.
